Montreal P Kirk Rueter makes his major league debut with 8 1/3 innings of shutout ball against the Giants. John Wetteland comes in to get the final two outs in Montreal’s 3 – 0 victory.
In Philadelphia, the Phillies defeat the Dodgers, 7 – 6, in a 20-inning marathon when Lenny Dykstra hits a bases-loaded two-run double off Rod Nichols. The game takes 6 hours and 10 minutes, and concludes at 1:47 AM. The Phils’ Mitch Williams blows a 5 – 3 lead in the 9th, allowing a hit and walking three before being ejected by umpire Jim Quick. Afterwards, John Kruk says, “I came here and I wanted to kill Mitch, but they told me it was against the law.” Phils rookie Kevin Stocker makes his major league debut, playing all 20 innings.
Mets P Bret Saberhagen throws a firecracker under a table near reporters at Shea Stadium, but no one is hurt.
Oakland OF Rickey Henderson leads off both games of the A’s doubleheader against the Indians with home runs. It is the first time this has happened since 1913, when Harry Hooper performed the feat for the Boston Red Sox. The Athletics win the 1st game, 6 – 5, but the Indians come back to take the nightcap, 6 – 2.
At the Astrodome, the Jalisco Charros beat the Monterrey Industrials, 2 – 1. It is the only 20th Century Mexican League game held in a major league stadium.
On July 3, 1993, Hall of Famer Don Drysdale dies from a heart attack. The 56-year-old Drysdale had been serving as a broadcaster for the Los Angeles Dodgers. 1993 – Darryl Kile slams a home run and a double, as well as pitching a six-hit shutout, to subdue St. Louis, 6-0. The homer comes against Omar Olivares. Eric Anthony contributes a two-run shot while Ken Caminiti punches three hits.
On July 3, 1993 Detroit’s Cecil Fielder becomes the third player in history to homer onto the left field roof at Tiger Stadium, doing so in the Tigers’ 11 – 5 loss to the Rangers. Harmon Killebrew and Frank Howard are the only other players to accomplish the feat. Source Baseball Reference July 3
