Red Sox shortstop John Valentin snares Marc Newfield’s sixth-inning line drive, steps on second retiring Mike Blowers, and then tags the runner coming from first, Kevin Mitchell, to turn an unassisted triple play. After completing the rare feat, accomplishing a play that has occurred only ten times in major league history, the infielder begins a three-homer outburst by Boston in the bottom of the frame, helping the team defeat the Mariners at Fenway Park, 4-3.
Pittsburgh C Don Slaught gets five hits, but it’s not enough to keep the Pirates from losing to the Reds, 8 – 7. His five safeties include a pair of doubles.
Toronto 3B Darnell Coles leads the Blue Jays to a 14 – 3 win over Minnesota by stroking three homers and driving home four runs.
California C Chris Turner leads the Angels to a 10 – 3 win over Boston. Entering the game batting only .138, Turner strokes five hits, including a pair of doubles, and gets two RBIs. He also becomes the first Angel C ever to steal home with a 2nd-inning theft.
1994 – Tony Eusebio gets four hits, including a double and a triple to pace a 13-6 spanking of the Cardinals. Eusebio and Andujar Cedeno drive in four runs each. Brian Williams is the easy winner.
1994 – Ken Caminiti slugs an inside-the-park homer while Craig Biggio and James Mouton belt the traditional kind as the Astros trap the Cubs, 12-6. Caminiti and Biggio are named to the N.L. All-Star team along with Jeff Bagwell, Doug Drabek and John Hudek(none as starters) to total a club-record five All-Stars in one season.
