In Anaheim, Goose Gossage makes his 1000th major league appearance, retiring Tim Salmon on a pop-up in the seventh inning of an eventual 4-2 Angels loss to the Mariners. The future Hall of Fame reliever will end his 22-year career playing in 1002 games with seven different teams.

Seattle defeats California, 4 – 2, as Rich Gossage notches the win in relief. It is Gossage’s 1,000th major league appearance on the mound, making him the 3rd pitcher to ever reach that milestone. Only Hoyt Wilhelm(1,070) and Kent Tekulve (1,050) have gotten into more games as pitchers.

The Reds defeat the Giants, 17 – 4, as former Giant Kevin Mitchell gets five hits and five RBIs against his former teammates. Mitchell strokes two singles, two doubles, and a home run.

The Giants lose to the Reds, 9 – 7, despite three home runs from OF Barry Bonds. Bonds picks up four ribbies as the Giants fall two games behind the Dodgers in the Western Division race.

Hostilities between the owners and players heat up. The owners withhold $7.8 million they are obligated to pay the players’ pension and benefit plans.
