1977 – After being called out on strikes by umpire Paul Pryor, Jose Cruz belts the game-winning homer in the 14th inning to give Houston a 2-1 triumph in Los Angeles. Cruz argues he has only two strikes on him and Pryor admits his mistake. Jose promptly sends the next pitch from Mike Garman into the right field stands.

July 6, 1977

In the final game of his twentieth and last full season, Ted Lyons beats the Indians, going the distance in the White Sox’ 3-1 victory at Cleveland’s League Park. The 41 year-old ‘Sunday Teddy,’ although exempt from the draft due to his age enlists in the U.S. Marine Corps after the season and fights in the Pacific during WW II, completes all of his twenty games, all started on Sundays, posting a 14-6 record along with an ERA of 2.10.

September 24, 1942

The day after dropping a doubleheader to the Phillies, the Brewers fire Ned Yost (457-502), ending the manager’s six-year tenure which saw Milwaukee develop from cellar dwellers into a contender in the National League Central Division. New skipper Dale Sveum, formerly the team’s third base coach, will try to stop the recent skid of 11 losses in 14 games and keep the 83-67 club in contention for the wild card.
