Florida scores five runs in the top of the 1st inning to jump out to a quick lead over Cincinnati, but the Reds bounce back with seven runs in the 2nd, and don’t look back. They score four more in the 5th, two in the 6th, six in the 7th, and three in the 8th to defeat the Marlins, 22 – 8. Kevin Mitchell leads the way with six runs batted in for the Reds.
1996 – Sean Berry drives in six as Houston blanks the Pirates, 10-0. Berry also steals a pair of bases. Jeff Bagwell goes 4-for-5. Donne Wall scatters seven hits in a complete-game shutout.
The Padres’ Scott Sanders pitches one-hit ball over eight innings and strikes out 10 to beat the Expos, 6 – 0. David Segui has the only hit for Montreal.
Mark McGwire pounds his 45th homer and drives in three runs as the A’s beat the Red Sox, 7 – 0. The loss snaps the Sox’s 5-game win streak. The 3rd-place Sox have been the American League’s hottest team since the All-Star break, going 33-17; on August 1st, Boston was 17 games out of first place, and since then have gained 11 games. A’s pitchers will record shutouts in their next two games as well.
Eddie Murray clouts his 499th homer and newly-acquired Pete Incaviglia adds a grand slam as the Orioles beat the Mariners, 5 – 2. The O’s are four back of the Yankees, down from 12 games on July 29th.
Adding their 8th new player this month, the Yankees reacquire 3B Charlie Hayes from the Pirates in exchange for a player to be named. This makes Wade Boggs a platoon player and he angrily states, “I’ll get my 3,000 hitssomewhere.”
The Orioles become the first major league team to have seven players hit 20 or more home runs in the same season when Bobby Bonilla goes deep off right-hander Bob Wells in the first inning of a 9-6 loss to Seattle at the Kingdome. The other Baltimore sluggers to reach the plateau are Rafael Palmeiro, Roberto Alomar, Cal Ripken, B.J. Surhoff, Brady Anderson, and Chris Hoiles.
Seattle obtains Dave Hollins from the Twins, and releases Jeff Manto, who signs with the Red Sox. Manto had been swapped on July 22 by the Red Sox.
The Orioles obtain two right-handed sluggers, 3B Todd Zeile and OF Pete Incaviglia, from the Phillies for two players to be named. Free agents at the end of the season, both will sign elsewhere.
