Thome is the first Cleveland lefthanded hitter to hit 30 homers in successive seasons since Hal Trosky in 1936-1937. Scott Sanders (3-9), making his fourth start since being traded to Detroit from Seattle, is the loser. He has lost all three of his decisions in a Tigers uniform.

At Anaheim, Jose Valentin, Dave Nilsson, and Jeromy Burnitz homer in the 4th inning, all off Ken Hill, as Milwaukee beats Anaheim, 5 – 2, for its 10th victory in 12 games. The loss drops Anaheim into a tie for first place in the AL West with the idle Seattle Mariners.

Jeromy Burnitz, coming off the bench in the Brewers’ 6-5 loss to Seattle at County Stadium, homers as a pinch hitter for the second consecutive time, tying an American League record. The major league mark for consecutive pinch-hit appearances with a home run is three, shared by Lee Lacy (Dodgers – May 2, 6, and 17, 1978) and Del Unser (Phillies – June 30, July 5 and 10, 1979).

Houston C Brad Ausmus becomes the first catcher to wear the Fox Sports “Catcher-Cam”, a small camera on the top of his mask, in the Astros’ 6 – 0 win over the Mets.
