With a 9 – 6 victory over the Dodgers, Kansas City becomes the first major league team to record three-game sweeps over the Dodgers and Yankees in one regular season. The Angels and Mariners also swept the Yankees and Dodgers in one season since interleague play began in 1997, but both were not three-game sweeps. At this point, Kansas City has posted an 11-4 record since Buddy Bell took over as manager on May 31st.

The Cleveland right fielder, who will finish the season with 165 ribbies, matches Ted Williams’ and Vern Stephens’ output with the Red Sox in 1949.

1948 – A DC6 plane carrying the Santiago Baseball Club crashes in Rio Verde de Yamasa, Monte Plata while returning from playing a doubleheader in Barahona. All 32 occupants are killed, including Dominican baseball legend Pedro Báez, the team’s manager, in what is considered the biggest tragedy in the country’s sports history.
