Former Chicago White Sox shortstop Ozzie Guillen signs a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles, who invite him to spring training as a non-roster invitee. Guillen will make the big team, but will be released on May 1st.

Houston inks a pair of free agent hurlers. One of them is lefty Pete Schourek, who has a history of arm problems and demands to only be used as a starter. He goes 7-6 in 15 starts before being sold to Boston in mid-season.
1998 – Don Sutton gets into the Hall of Fame on his fifth try. With 324 wins, Sutton had the most victories of any eligible pitcher not in the Hall. He reached the postseason with three different clubs (the Dodgers, Brewers and Angels), and struck out 3,574 batters in 23 seasons. Sutton receives 386 votes of the record 473 ballots cast for 81.6 percent. Tony Perez falls short with 355 votes, and Ron Santo, on the ballot for the 15th and final time, gains 204 votes.
Toronto Blue Jays catcher Benito Santiago is injured when he loses control of the car he is driving and crashes into a tree in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Toronto also loses first baseman Carlos Delgado to a shoulder injury which he sustains while diving for a ball in a game in Puerto Rico. He will be out until late April.
Steve Hinton sets the Australian Baseball League record with four home runs in a game. The Brisbane Bandits combine to hit 9, also a record, against the Perth Heat.
