Texas Rangers catcher Ivan Rodriguez wins the American League MVP Award.

On November 18, 1999 — Texas Rangers catcher Ivan Rodriguez wins the American League MVP Award. Rodriguez was runner-up for team MVP to Rafael Palmeiro. Rodriguez out points Pedro Martinez 256 – 239. He will hit a career-high 35 home runs and RBI’s with 113.  This will be the only time in his career he topels 30 hrs or 100 RBI’s. “Pudge” however was an excellent hitting catcher hitting .296 for his career and was a tremendous defender winning 13 gold gloves and caught 46% of would-be base stealers. He will be elected into the Hall of Fame in 1997.

Martinez received more 1st place votes 8 -7 and Cleveland Indian teammates split 8 votes – Manny Ramirez and Robbie Alomar and each player totaled exactly 226 points each.
