The American Tobacco Company’s near-mint condition 1909 Honus Wagner card goes for $1.1 million in an eBay online auction. The high bidder will pay $1.265 million including a 15 percent buyer’s premium for the 91-year-old card of the Hall of Fame Pirate shortstop. Other high-priced items in the auction include a baseball autographed by the entire 1919 Chicago “Black Sox” team, including Shoeless Joe Jackson, as well as the umpires who worked the final game of the 1919 World Series, which sells for $93,666, including a 15 percent buyer’s premium. The ball’s value, believed to be the most for such an item, is unusually high because the autographs include that of Jackson, who was considered illiterate and usually only signed legal documents. A ball signed by the 1919 Reds goes for $11,208, while a baseball autographed by Babe Ruth sells for $76,020. A contract from Jackson’s sale of his Chicagopool hall to teammate Lefty Williams, sells for $36,098; the contract, dated October 6, 1921, is for just $1.
A report presented to owners, The Commissioner’s Initiative: Women and Baseball, finds women make up 46 percent of the average crowd at a big league game and urges major league franchises to make more of an effort to market to women patrons. According to the same study, forty-three percent of women could not name a player on their home team’s roster.
John Olerud has a game-tying double disallowed in the top of the sixth inning when first base umpire Jim Wolf had called time before the pitch because a baseball had come out into fair territory from the visitors’ bullpen. The Mariner first baseman’s disappointment is short-lived after he hits Brian Meadow’s 1-0 pitch for a three-run homer, giving Seattle a 4-2 lead in their eventual victory over the Padres at Qualcomm Stadium.
Major League owners decide to return to playing an unbalanced schedule (teams play more games against teams in their own division) rather than the presently-used balanced schedule in which they play approximately the same number of games against all teams within the league. The American League has used a balanced schedule since 1977 and the National League started in 1993.
Atlanta 2B Quilvio Veras tears the ACL in his right knee. He will miss the remainder of the season.
The Dodgers edge the Angels, 4 – 3, in 10 innings but not before California executes an unusual play. After the Dodgers’ Adrian Beltre triples off the newly-renovated RF fence in the bottom of the 10th, the Angels move LF Darin Erstad to the infield to prevent the run scoring. Erstad, playing at about second base, throws out Kevin Elster for an OF assist. Jim Leyritz then singles in the run.
In a six-player deal, the Reds trade Denny Neagle (8-2, 3.52) and outfielder Mike Frank to the Yankees for minor league third baseman Drew Henson, outfielder Jackson Melian and pitchers Brian Reith and Ed Yarnall. None of the four top prospects acquired by the Reds will pan out.
The Phillies trade hurler Andy Ashby, 33, to the Braves for pitchers Bruce Chen and Jimmy Osting. Chen, who made 22 appearances for the Braves this year, all in relief, will make 15 appearances for the Phils – all starts.
The American League wins its 4th consecutive All-Star Game, beating the National League, 6 – 3. Derek Jeter of the Yankees and Chipper Jones of the Braves each go 3 for 3 in the contest. Jeter takes MVP honors, while Chicago’s James Baldwin gets the victory.
