Larry Dierker resigns as manager, ending a five-year run that can be argued as the most successful in team history

2001 – Larry Dierker resigns as manager, ending a five-year run that can be argued as the most successful in team history. His winning percentage (.553) is tops for the franchise. His 448 wins rank second to Bill Virdon. The good news was four division crowns in five years. The bad news was a 2-12 post-season record, failing to escape out of the first round of the playoffs each year. But the numbers don’t begin to capture Dierker’s story, one as unique as the Hawaiian-shirted lanky Californian that has spent practically his entire adulthood with the franchise.

The Yankees, being down 2-0 in the best-of-five series, stave off elimination, beating the A’s and Barry Zito, 1-0, thanks to the shutout pitching by Mike Mussina and Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada’s fifth-inning home run. Shortstop Derek Jeter backing up an errant relay throw down the first base line and flipping it home to cut down Jeremy Giambi as the potential tying run becomes one of the most memorable defensive plays in postseason history.

Jorge Posada’s 5th-inning solo home run accounts for all the scoring as the Yankees defeat Oakland, 1 – 0, to stay alive in their ALDS. Pitcher Mike Mussina gives up just four hits in seven innings to get the win. Derek Jeter makes his famous “Flip Play” on a relay throw to the plate to nab Jeremy Giambi, who neglects to slide, and save the game.
