On August 18, 2003 — 2003 – A major brawl breaks out in a California League game between the Lancaster JetHawks and Inland Empire 66ers. In the 15th inning of the game, Josh Kranawetter hits Evel Bastida with a pitch. Bastida charges the mound and smashes Kranawetter in the back with his bat. He is charged with felony assault and suspended for the rest of the year. 16 players and a coach get three-game suspensions for the ensuing fight.
Wearing their home whites and batting in the bottom of the innings, the visiting Reds drop a 5-3 decision to the Giants in the second game of the twin bill at San Francisco’s AT&T Park. The make-up game of a washout of a July Fourth contest, which could not that could not take place in the home ballpark, set up the possibility for the first time in major league history that an away team produced a walk-off win on the road had Cincinnati come back from their two-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth.

In less than a masterful performance, Greg Maddux pitches five innings to register his 300th victory when the Cubs beat the Giants, 8-4. The 38 year-old is the 22nd pitcher to reach the plateau and many believe may be the last to reach this coveted milestone.

2009 – Sergio Mitre earns his first win since 2007 as the Yankees beat Baltimore, 6 – 4. Mitre underwent Tommy John surgery in 2008, then was suspended for 50 games after testing positive for a banned substance; he allows 4 runs in 5 2/3 innings in his first start after being called up from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace the injured Chien-Ming Wang. A two-run homer by Robinson Cano off Rich Hill and a two-run single by Alex Rodriguez are the big blows for the Bronx Bombers. Combined with Boston’s 4 – 2 loss at Texas, the win gives the Yankees sole possession of first place in the AL East for the first time this season.
