The Giants sign Chinese-Hawaiian infielder William “Buck” Lai, to a major league contract. Lai had been signed by the Phillies in 1918 but never appeared in a game, and since then has played in the minors and for the semipro Brooklyn Bushwicks. Alas, he’ll be on the Giants for a month but never appear in a game.

January 9, 1928

Roberto Clemente, just a double shy of the cycle, scores the tying run, drives in the go-ahead run and keeps his team ahead with a crucial 9th-inning outfield assist, leading the Piratesto a 4 – 3 win over Cincinnati in a preview of the National League Championship Series. Clemente’s 150th career triple leads to the tying run in the 6th and his 400-foot first-pitch bomb over the right-centerfield fence off rookie Wayne Simpson unties it in the 8th. To keep it untied, Clemente puts down his bat and lets his arm do the talking as he guns down Tommy Helms at the plate in the 9th to seal the victory.

July 17, 1970

Cheng-Min Peng becomes the fastest player in Chinese Professional Baseball League history to 1,000 hits, getting there in 844 games (topping Chung-Yi Huang’s mark by 32) and 2,838 at-bats (topping Min-Ching Lo by 406 AB). He is the 10th player in league history to 1,000. Chin-Chih Huang gives up the hit.
