2009 – Randy Johnson takes a no-hitter into the 7th inning and combines with Bobby Howry and Brian Wilson for a 2 – 0 victory over the Diamondbacks. It is Johnson’s 296th win, but his first with the San Francisco Giants.

Cleveland crushes the New York Yankees, 22 – 4, at New Yankee Stadium, scoring 14 runs in the 2nd inning, the most runs given up in an inning in Yankee history. Asdrubal Cabrera hits a grand slam, Mark DeRosa and Shin-Soo Choo add three-run home runs, and Travis Hafner, Grady Sizemore and Victor Martinez all connect for solo shots for the Indians. Yankee starter Chien-Ming Wang, who missed the second half of 2008 with a leg injury, is charged with 8 runs in 1 1/3 innings to raise his ERA for the year to 34.50. Making his major league debut, Anthony Claggett succeeds him but gives up 8 more runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Jason Kubel blasts a grand slam to become the ninth Twins player to hit for the cycle, the first to do it at the Metrodome since 1986 when Kirby Puckett accomplished the feat in front of the home crowd. The left fielder’s bases-full homer caps a seven-run eighth inning in Minnesota’s 11-9 comeback victory over the Angels.

Washington’s right fielder Adam Dunn and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman start the game against Florida with the word “Nationals” misspelled on the front of their uniforms. Majestic Athletic, the manufacturer of the jerseys, takes full responsibility for the missing “O” and apologizes for the mistake to the organization, the players, and their fans.

The Mariners fall, 5 – 1, to the Angels but Ichiro Suzuki makes history in the losing effort. He collects the 3,086th hit of his pro career, breaking the Japanese record held for decades by Isao Harimoto.

The Washington Nationals finally enter the win column, defeating the Phillies, 8 – 2, at home. Shairon Martis benefits from four home runs to get the win, which comes after the Nats lost seven straight to open the season.

The Cleveland Indians spoil the opening of New Yankee Stadium with a 10 – 2 win over the New York Yankees. Jhonny Peralta hits a two-run double off Jose Veras to break a 1 – 1 tie, then Grady Sizemore delivers the KO with a grand slam off Damaso Marte. Jorge Posada is the first batter to homer in the Yankees’ new ballpark with a solo shot off winning pitcher Cliff Lee in the 5th. New York had won 16 of their final 17 home openers at the old Yankee Stadium.

Ian Kinsler of the Texas Rangers goes 6 for 6 and hits for the cycle in a 19 – 6 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Kinsler scores 5 times, Marlon Byrd goes 5 for 6 and Nelson Cruz hits a grand slam off Radhames Liz in the rout. It had been 119 years since Farmer Weaver had been the last big leaguer to go 6 for 6 and hit for the cycle in a 9-inning game.
