The Giants get a scare in the 8th when Prince Fielder bowls over C Eli Whiteside in a collision at the plate; the play comes only two days after starting catcher Buster Posey was lost for the season with a broken ankle as the result of a similar collision, but Whiteside is okay and can complete the game.

The Red Sox win their 12th game in their last 14 to move into first place in the AL East. Today, they roll for a 6 – 3 win over Detroit behind ageless pitcher Tim Wakefield and homers by Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford.

New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon sells a minority stake in the team to investor David Einhorn for $200 million. Wilpon’s financial troubles, stemming from losses incurred in the Bernard Madoff fraudulent investment scheme, and from a $1 billion lawsuit from other victims of Madoff’s fraud, have been much talked about in recent weeks; the sale should give him some financial breathing room.

In the 12th inning of an eventual 7-6 loss to Florida, Giants catcher Buster Posey is lost for the season as a result of a brutal collision at home plate with Scott Cousins, who scores the go-ahead run. An MRI will confirm last season’s Rookie of the Year has a fractured left fibula and three torn ligaments in his left ankle, and will need season-ending surgery to repair the damage.

Jo-Jo Reyes makes his 28th straight start without recording a victory, tying the major league record shared by Cliff Curtis (1910-11, Braves, Cubs, Phillies) and Matt Keough (1978-79, A’s). The Blue Jays southpaw, who leaves the game trailing 5-0 to the Yankees after just three innings of work, hasn’t won a start since June 13, 2008.

The Red Sox make it a no-contest in the battle of baseball’s two hottest teams. They crush the Indians, 14 – 2, while banging out a season-high 20 hits. Jon Lester earns his 7th win, tops in the majors, while Mitch Talbot is roughed up in his return from the disabled list.

It takes 6 hours and 10 minutes for the Phillies to beat the Reds, 5 – 4, in 19 innings. By the time the winning run scores with two outs in the bottom of the 19th, the Phils have been forced to use back-up infielder Wilson Valdez on the mound, in his first professional pitching appearance. He throws a scoreless inning, then picks up the win when Raul Ibanez hits a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 19th. Wilson is the first position player to earn a win since Brent Mayne in 2000. Losing pitcher Carlos Fisher does yeoman work himself, pitching 5 1/3 scoreless innings before giving up the game-ending run; for the Phils, Danys Baez had earlier pitched five scoreless innings in relief. The Reds almost end the contest in the 10th, when Jay Bruce hits a solo homer, but Ryan Howard replies with a long ball of his own, and 9 more frames are necessary to determine a winner.

Just after midnight, the Jupiter Hammerheads pull out a 2 – 1, 23-inning win over the Clearwater Threshers. After failing to score against two Clearwater position players, Jupiter gets a run in the 23rd off Clearwater closer Justin Friend, who entered the game with a 0.86 ERA and a minor league-leading 16 saves. Backup 3B Jose Duarte singles in the winner. Jiwan James reaches base five times and falls a homer shy of the cycle in a losing cause, while SS Jeff Dominguez goes 0 for 9 for Jupiter. The teams finish six innings shy of the Florida State League record, set 45 years earlier.

The Yankees end an American League record run of 341 games without a complete game when CC Sabathia goes the distance in a 5 – 4 victory over Toronto.

Carlos Quentin hits three homers for the White Sox in an 8 – 6 win over the Rangers. The game is delayed three hours in the 4th inning by heavy rain and hail that forces the evacuation of the upper deck at the Ballpark in Arlington.
