Suddenly, the Mets are scoring at a record pace, even with a topsy turvy line-up that features C Ronny Paulino batting clean-up. They pound the Tigers, 16 – 9, to set a team record with 52 runs over their last four games. Paulino and Angel Pagan have four hits apiece, and Scott Hairston hits a bases-loaded triple. Utility player Don Kelly gets the final out of the game, the only Tiger hurler not to give up a run in the game. The Bengals hit five homers – two by Miguel Cabrera – to no avail.

Boston manager Terry Francona tries an unusual defensive alignment in today’s game against the Phillies, but it doesn’t help as the Sox lose, 2 – 1. In the middle of a nine-game stretch of interleague games played in National League ballparks where the designated hitter cannot be used, Francona puts David Ortiz at 1B for the first time this year, in order to give him a few at-bats, and to do this, he moves the American League’s leading hitter, 1B Adrian Gonzalez, to RF for only the second time of his career. However, their two bats stay mute, and Boston scores its only run when P John Lackey’s double to center field drives in rookie LF Josh Reddick; they fall to the NL leaders, led by rookie starting pitcher Vance Worley. Raul Ibanez drives in both Philly runs with a single and a homer.

The Mets hit their first grand slam since August 1, 2009, when Jason Bay connects in the 4th inning of their game against the Tigers. They don’t have to wait as long for the next one, as one inning later, Carlos Beltranimitates him to cap a 14 – 3 win. The Mets had been outslammed 18-0 in the interim.

Citing MLB refusal to sign off on a transaction that would provide the team with $385 million, the Dodgers file for bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court. Although there will be no disruption to the day-to-day status of the franchise, the Chapter 11 financing permits the Dodgers to use $150 million for daily operations and gives owner Frank McCourt time to seek a media deal that will ensure the club’s long-term financial stability.

Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt files for bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court, blaming Major League Baseball’s refusal to approve a long-term television deal with Fox Sports that, McCourt claims, would have solved the team’s current cash flow challenge. The Dodgers are rumored to be on the verge of failing to meet salary obligations at the end of the month, and the move seeks to make it harder for MLB to seize control of the team. The bankruptcy does not affect the team on the field, as they pound out 25 hits in a 15 – 0 rout of Minnesota. The 25 hits tie the club record since its move to Los Angeles in 1958. Every starter in the lineup has at least a hit, a run scored and an RBI, a first for the team. Tony Gwynn, Matt Kemp and Trent Oeltjen all have four hits – as many as the Twins. Chad Billingsley is the beneficiary of the offensive windfall.

The interleague series between Florida and Seattle is plagued by scheduling problems, first being moved across the country because of a concert by the rock band U2 in Miami, and then seeing the start of today’s game delayed until 7:05 pm – the latest ever for a Sunday night game at Safeco Field – because the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer are playing an afternoon game and municipal authorities do not have the capacity to deal with simultaneous sporting events in neighboring locations. The game itself ends on a wacky play, as the Mariners’ Dustin Ackley scores the winning run on a wild pitch by Steve Cishek in the 10th inning. The game is not over, though, since the Marlins are the home team, but Brandon League pitches a scoreless bottom of the 10th to preserve the 2 – 1 win. The Marlins are now 3-22 in June.
