Adrian Beltre remains red hot. After being named the American League Player of the Week for his historic combination of hitting for the cycle and having a three-homer game, he goes 3 for 3 with a home run and 4 RBI in Texas’s 6 – 5 win over the Rays. Beltre is now hitting .385 with 6 homers and 13 RBI in his last 8 games.

Felix Hernandez is at it again, pitching a five-hit shutout to beat the Twins, 1 – 0. Eric Thames’ solo homer off Liam Hendriks in the 8th acounts for the game’s only run. Hendriks falls to 0-7 lifetime, while Hernandez (13-5) has his fourth 1-0 victory of the season, including his perfect game on August 15th. Only two other pitchers have won four such decisions in a season since 1969: Ferguson Jenkins in 1974 and Bert Blyleven in 1976. Also, only two other hurlers (Carl Hubbell, in 1933, and Dick Rudolph, in 1916) had tossed three 1 – 0 wins in a month.

The Orioles obtain P Joe Saunders in a trade with the Diamondbacks, sending reliever Matt Lindstrom in return.

The Phillies complete a three-game sweep of the first-place Nationals as Cliff Lee hits a go-ahead double in the 5th and gives up one run in 7 innings. Lee is now 3-7 after the 5 – 1 win in which Josh Lindblom picks up his first career save.

Justin Toole of the Carolina Mudcats plays all nine positions in a 4 – 2 win over the Salem Red Sox. He starts in RF and plays one position each inning in a special “Toole Time” promotion. His biggest challenge comes when he catches the 8th inning, having never played there before. He then ends the game by pitching the 9th with a 4 – 0 lead. He gives up a pair of solo homers but strikes out the last two batters he faces to end the contest. The promotion came out of a conversation early in the year when manager Edwin Rodriguez asked Toole where he played. “Everywhere”, he answered, leading to the stunt.

The Indians end nine-game losing skid by defeating the Yankees, 3 – 1, behind Justin Masterson. In spite of the win, the Indians, who were in playoff contention in late July, have lost 22 of their last 27 games.

Chris Davis homers three times in a 6 – 4 Orioles win over the Toronto Blue Jays. With Adrian Beltre having turned the trick on them in their last game on August 22nd, the Orioles are the fist team ever to be involved in back-to-back three-homer games.

Matt Harrison has a no-hitter until Trevor Plouffe singles with two outs in the 7th, but it’s Adrian Beltre who ends up with a feat, hitting for the cycle for the second time of his career in the Rangers’ 8 – 0 demolition of the Twins.

The Angels win a Fenway Park slugfest, 14 – 13, with a pair of 10th-inning runs. Boston grabs a 6 – 0 lead against C.J. Wilson after 2 innings, but Los Angeles replies with an 8-run 3rd inning, chasing Franklin Morales. The Red Sox then blow a 9 – 8 lead in the 7th, and an 11 – 9 lead in the 9th. In that frame, closer Alfredo Aceves surrenders a lead-off homer to Vernon Wells that bounces on the line marking the top of the Green Monster and back onto the field; replays clearly show it never left the park, but Boston fails to ask for a review. In the 10th, Kendrys Morales hits a solo homer off Aceves to start the inning, but it’s an insurance run scored by Erick Aybaron a double by Wells that proves to be the difference, as Boston claws back a run and the game ends with Dustin Pedroia, representing the tying run, on first base.
