2B Darwin Barney of the Cubs makes a wild throw to first base after fielding Justin Upton’s ground ball in the 8th inning of the Cubs’ 8 – 3 loss to the Diamondbacks. The miscue ends Barney’s 141-game errorless streak, tying Placido Polanco’s all-time record for a single season, set in 2007.

Fernando Rodney sets a franchise record when he notches his 46th save of the season, throwing a scoreless ninth inning in the Rays’ 3-2 victory over Chicago at U.S. Cellular Field. The 35 year-old right-handed closer surpasses the team mark established in 2010 by Rafael Soriano.

In the Tigers’ 5-4 victory over Kansas City at Comerica Park, Doug Fister establishes a new American League record when he strikes out nine consecutive batters, one shy of Tom Seaver’s major league mark. The Detroit right-hander whiffs the last batter in the fourth frame, strikes out the side in the next two innings, and continues the streak until Salvador Perez, his first victim, grounds out to the shortstop on a 1-2 pitch to end the seventh inning.

The Indians fire manager Manny Acta with a week left to go and replace him with coach Sandy Alomar Jr.. Acta was done in by a 5-24 record in August, the worst month in the 112-year history of the franchise.

The Astros name Washington third base coach Bo Porter as their new manager, although he will remain with his current team for the remainder of this season and the postseason before assuming his new duties next year.

The Tigers beat the Royals, 5 – 4, and when the White Sox lose to Cleveland, 6 – 4, they take sole possession of first place in the AL Central for the first time since July 24th. In the 5th inning, Alex Gordon robs Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera of a home run by catching a ball over the left field fence; the catch may turn out to be costly, as Cabrera is putting in the most serious bid for a Triple Crown since Carl Yastrzemski’s 1967 feat.

David Wright, the franchise leader in doubles, extra-base hits, walks, RBIs, and runs scored, breaks the record for the most hits in Met history when he beats out a slow grounder down the third base line for an infield single in the team’s 6-0 victory over Pittsburgh at Citi Field. The 29 year-old third baseman’s 1,419th career hit surpasses Ed Kranepool, a first baseman and outfielder who played for New York from 1962-1979.

CC Sabathia strikes out 10 batters over 8 innings to lead the Yankees over the Twins, 8 – 2. But the Yankees can’t put any additional distance between themselves and the second-place Orioles, who remain 1 1/2 game behind, as the Birds hit seven homers in routing the Blue Jays, 12 – 2. Chris Davis and Manny Machado both hit two long balls for the O’s, while Nate McLouth leads off the bottom of the 1st by going yard, and Jim Thome and Mark Reynolds get the other two. The seven homers tie a club record accomplished thrice, last on August 26, 1985.
