In tribute to the victims of yesterday’s Boston Marathon bombings, the fans at Yankee Stadium sing Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline, the anthem of their American League East rivals. Before the contest against Arizona, the Bronx Bombers display their logo next to the Red Sox emblem with the words “United We Stand” on an outside video board.

The Braves hit five solo homers to win their 10th straight game, 6 – 3, over Kansas City. Jason Heyward, Justin Upton and Dan Uggla all homer to put the Braves ahead in the 8th, following two earlier long balls by Juan Francisco. The final run is driven in by Chris Johnson after the barrage of dingers in the 8th. It is the Braves’ longest winning streak since 2000.

The Rockies battle the elements to sweep the Mets in a doubleheader at home. The opener is delayed by two hours as an 8-inch snowfall has to be removed from the field, with Colorado owner Dick Monfort pitching in by manning a shovel, and the day concludes when Jordan Pacheco singles home the winning run in the 10th inning of the second game, for a 9 – 8 win. The Rockies also win the opener, 8 – 4, as the games are played in frigid conditions and occasional snow flurries. Reporters quip that there are more snowmen than fans at Coors Field.

The Red Sox defeat the Rays, 3 -2, in the traditional late-morning game played on Patriots’ Day. Trailing 2 – 1 after being shut down on two hits through 8 innings by Ryan Dempster and Koji Uehara, the Rays tie the game in the top of the 9th against Andrew Bailey, deputizing for ineffective closer Joel Hanrahan. The Red Sox come back immediately, as Dustin Pedroia draws a two-out walk off Joel Peralta and Mike Napoli lines a double off the Green Monster to end the game. Shortly after the game ends, twin explosions rock downtown Boston, MA, causing numerous casualties near the finish line of the annual Boston Marathon.

The Braves complete a three-game sweep of the Nationals with a 9 – 0 shutout, improving their record to a major league best 11-1. Paul Maholm pitches 7 2/3 scoreless innings, while Justin Upton hits his 7th homer, tops in the majors.

The Chicago Cubs and the City of Chicago, IL agree on renovations to Wrigley Field that will cost $500 million. An electronic video scoreboard will be installed in left field, and the number of night games allowed at the historic facility will be increased. No public funds will go towards the renovations, although owner Tom Ricketts will be allowed to develop property near the ballpark to create additional revenue streams.

Matt Harvey takes a no-hitter into the 7th inning, until the Twins’ Justin Morneau hits a homer that clanks against the right field foul pole at Target Field with two outs. Harvey has the longest outing of his career, giving up only two hits in 8 innings in the Mets’ 4 – 2 win. The Mets have seven consecutive hits in the 5th to score all their runs.

The movie 42, about Jackie Robinson’s first two seasons in organized baseball and his breaking of the color line, opens in theaters across the United States. It will be the top-drawing movie its first weekend.

The Blue Jays continue their cursed beginning to the season, losing SS Jose Reyes when he suffers an ankle injury sliding into second base on a stolen base attempt in the 6th inning of today’s game with the Royals. He is expected to be out for three months. The Jays win, 8 – 4, but the loss of Reyes casts a huge pall on celebrations.

The Yankees turn only their second triple play since 1969 in defeating the Orioles, 5 – 2. With two men on in the 8th, Manny Machado hits a hard grounder to 2B Robinson Cano. The play then goes 4-6-5-6-5-3-4 as Alexi Casilla is caught in a rundown between second and third, and Machado is erased when he attempts to take second during that time. It is the first time that a triple killing has taken that particular circuitous route.
