The Nationals name Diamondback coach Matt Williams as their sixth manager in team history, replacing Davey Johnson, who previously announced his retirement. The job will be the 47 year-old former All-Star third baseman’s first major league managerial stint.

Boston captures the World Championship at Fenway Park for the first time since 1918 when they beat the Cardinals, 6-1, in Game 6 of the Fall Classic. The team that had suffered an 86-year drought between World Series titles has now won three crowns in the past ten years.

The White Sox formally announce the signing of Cuban defector José Dariel Abreu to a six-year, $68 million deal, hoping he will follow in the footsteps of Yoenis Cespedes and Yasiel Puig, who became impact players immediately upon reaching the big leagues. He will do that and more, with a tremendous rookie season in 2014.

Winners of the 2013 Gold Glove Awards are announced. The Baltimore Orioles, who set an all-time record by committing only 54 errors as a team, take home three trophies, courtesy of SS J.J. Hardy, 3B Manny Machado and CF Adam Jones. Eight of the recipients are first-time winners, while Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina takes home his sixth award.

The Red Sox take a 3 games to 2 lead in the World Series with a 3 – 1 win over the Cardinals. David Ortiz continues to be unstoppable at the plate, getting three more hits to increase his average for the Series to .733, while back-up C David Ross has the big blow, a tie-breaking ground rule double in the 7th. Jon Lester prevails over Adam Wainwright for the second time.

The San Diego State University baseball team continues their tradition in which every player dons a costume during a late-October intra-squad scrimmage. The Aztecs’ third annual Halloween Game at Tony Gwynn Stadium, which is open to the public, features team members dressed as the Jamaican Bobsled Team, social media apps, a Leprechaun, as well as Captain America and Captain Underwear.

The Red Sox win the first World Series game to ever end on a pickoff, beating the Cardinals, 4-2, in Game 4 of the Fall Classic. Kolten Wong, a 23 year-old rookie pinch-running for Allen Craig, is caught off first base by Boston closer Koji Uehara, ending the Busch Stadium contest with the dangerous Carlos Beltran at the plate.

With runners on second and third with one out, Jon Jay’s grounder results in Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia easily throwing out Yadier Molina at the plate. After making the tag at home, Boston backstop Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s errant throw to third base causes third baseman Will Middlebrooks to collide with Allen Craig, who had gone to third and appears to be thrown out while advancing to home, but the umpires ruled that the infielder interfered the baserunner, giving the Cardinals an unusual 5-4 walk-off victory in the first World Series game to ever end on an obstruction call.

2013 – St. Louis evens the World Series with a Game 2 win over the Red Sox, 4 – 2, at Fenway Park, behind outstanding rookie P Michael Wacha. Trailing 2 – 1 after 6 innings, after to a two-run homer by David Ortiz, St. Louis scores two runs in the 7th on a sacrifice fly combined with a pair of errors, and add a third run on Carlos Beltran’s single later in the inning. Boston had won 9 straight World Series game before tonight’s loss.

2013 – The Red Sox jump on the Cardinals early, scoring five runs in the first two innings, to cruise to an 8 – 1 win in Game 1 of the World Series. Mike Napoli hits a bases-clearing double in the 1st and the Sox add two more runs in the 2nd in spite of Carlos Beltran robbing David Ortiz of a grand slam with a great catch. Jon Lester pitches 7 1/3 scoreless innings for the win while Adam Wainwright takes the loss.
