The Mets become the first team to have three players appear in a game whose last name begins with a lower case ‘d’, when Travis d’arnaud, Jacob deGrom, and Matt den Dekker all play in the Mets’ 6-5 walk-off loss to Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park. After having to use an upside-down capital ‘P’ on d’arnaud’s jersey last season due to lack of lower case letters, New York equipment manager Kevin Kierst asked Majestic, MLB’s uniform supplier, to make ‘small’ uniform letters available, knowing there would be even more of a need this season.

The host Houston Astros win the annual Civil Rights Game, 2 – 1, over the Orioles, for their seventh straight win. Brett Oberholtzer is a winner over Miguel Gonzalez. At the Beacon Awards luncheon which precedes the game, Major League Baseball honors a number of Civil Rights pioneers, including poet Maya Angelou, who passed away earlier in the week.

The Blue Jays’ nine-game winning streak is snapped by an 8 – 6, 10-inning loss to the Kansas City Royals, but Edwin Encarnacion continues to set homer records. By hitting a pair of long balls, he claims the all-time Blue Jays record for homers in a month with 16, passing Jose Bautista, and ties Mickey Mantle for the American League record for most homers in May. He is only the third player to have five multiple-homer games in a month, following Harmon Killebrew in May of 1959 and Albert Belle in September of 1995. The Jays come within an out of extending their streak to 10 games, as they lead, 6 – 5, with two outs in the 9th, when pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson ties the game, taking advantage of SS Jose Reyes’s errant throw to first base on a ground ball. The Royals then score twice against Todd Redmond in the 10th to win the game.

Josh Collmenter faces the minimum 27 batters in spite of allowing three hits in recording his first career complete game and shutout as the Diamondbacks defeat the Reds, 4 – 0. All three Reds baserunners are erased on double plays, including Brayan Pena, who is tagged out at third in trying to advance on a fly out after hitting a double.

The Blue Jays are the hottest team in the majors after winning their 9th straight and 14th of 16th, 3 – 2 against the Rays. Tampa Bay hits starter Liam Hendriks hard, but a number of defensive gems by the Jays keep the score close, until the bottom of the 9th when Dioner Navarro leads off with a single off Juan Carlos Oviedo. Anthony Gose then lays a perfect bunt down the first base line, and Oviedo’s throw goes into right field, allowing pinch-runner Kevin Pillar to race all the way home with the winning run.

Things have not been going so well on the mound for Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo this year, but today it’s with his bat that he gives his team a win. Called upon as a pinch-hitter in the 10th inning against the Orioles, he hits a double off T.J. McFarland to drive in Mark Reynolds from first base for a 7 – 6 win. The Orioles had walked Reynolds intentionally with two outs and the bases empty, knowing P Francisco Rodriguez was due up next and that Milwaukee had used all of its position players already. However, Gallardo, who boasts a lifetime .202 batting average and 12 homers, makes them pay for their presumption that pitchers cannot hit.

One day after teammate Josh Beckett’s no-hitter, the Dodgers’ Hyun-Jin Ryu makes a bid to repeat the feat as he begins his start against the Reds with seven perfect innings before Todd Frazier doubles to lead off the 8th. No team has ever pitched back-to back no-hitters, but combined with the hitless 9th inning recorded by Paul Maholm on May 24th, the Dodgers tie a record set by the Angels in 2012 with 17 consecutive innings without allowing a hit. They win the game, 4 – 3.

Josh Beckett of the Dodgers records the first no-hitter of the year by blanking the Phillies, 6-0. It is the first no-hitter by a Dodgers pitcher since Hideo Nomo pitched one in 1996, and the first nine-inning no-hitter by an opposing pitcher in Philadelphia since Bill Stoneman of the Montreal Expos back in 1969.

The Red Sox lose their 8th straight, bowing 1 – 0 to the Rays on a pinch-hit double by Cole Figueroa in the bottom of the 9th, Figueroa’s first career RBI. The Sox also lose RF Shane Victorino, who leaves the game in the top of the 9th after aggravating a pulled hamstring.
