Jerome Williams does something no pitcher has ever done before: he beats the Athletics for the third time this season – for his third different team. He had recorded a win against the A’s wearing the uniforms of the Astros and Rangers, before earning a 3 – 0 victory for the Phillies today.

Jason DeGrom strikes out the first eight batters he faces in the Mets’ 6-5 loss in Miami, tying the modern-day major league mark to start a game. The Amazins’ rookie right-hander now shares the record with Jim Deshaies, who struck out the first eight Dodgers he faced with the Astros in a 1986 contest.

Brandon McCarthy throws nine pitches, has nine strikes, and records three outs, retiring Wil Myers, Nick Franklin, and Matt Joyce in the seventh inning of the Yankees’ 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field. The 31 year-old right-hander pitches the fifth Immaculate Inning in franchise history, joining Al Downing (1967), Ron Guidry (1984), A.J. Burnett (2009), and Ivan Nova (2013) in accomplishing the feat.

Two more teams punch their tickets to the postseason. The Orioles are the AL East champions for the first time since 1997 after defeating the Blue Jays, 8 – 2, and the Nationals clinch the NL East crown for the second time in three years when they beat the Atlanta Braves, 3 – 0.

The Cubs’ Jake Arrieta throws a one-hitter in shutting out the Reds, 7 – 0. Brandon Phillips’ two-out double in the 8th is the only blemish as Arrieta strikes out 13.

The Mets’ Jacob deGrom ties a major league record when he strikes out the first eight batters he faces before his opponent on the mound for the Marlins, Jarred Cosart, singles to right. DeGrom ties the record set by Jim Deshaies in 1986. He strikes out 13 in 7 innings but ends up with a no-decision as the Marlins win, 6 – 5.

The Angels are the first team to clinch a postseason spot, securing at least a wild card berth after an 8 – 1 win over the Seattle Mariners. Rookie Matt Shoemaker wins his 16th of the year with another outstanding performance, but has to leave the game in the 8th with an apparent injury.

Jonathan Papelbon is ejected for grabbing his crotch, responding to the boos from the Citizens Bank Park crowd after he gives up four runs in the ninth inning of Phillies’ 5-4 loss to Miami. The apologetic closer, who insists he wasn’t making a vulgar motion toward fans, will be suspended for seven games and fined by Major League Baseball for making a lewd gesture and for bumping Joe West, the ump who will also receive a one-day suspension for pulling on the reliever’s jersey after he threw the player out of the game.

The Marlins win their first game since losing star OF Giancarlo Stanton to an injury thanks to a dramatic 9th-inning comeback against the Phillies. Trailing 4 – 1, the Marlins score four times against closer Jonathan Papelbon as Jordany Valdespin, Christian Yelich and Justin Bour collect RBIs to tie the score, and a wild pitch by Papelbon lets in the winning run. A frustrated Papelbon then gets ejected by umpire Joe West for gesturing at the crowd before Steve Cishek pitches the bottom of the inning to rack up his 35th save, setting a new personal best. Papelbon will be fined and suspended seven games for his unprofessional gesture, but umpire West will also receive a one-game suspension for grabbing the pitcher’s jersey after the incident.
