With Cub runners on first and second in the fourth inning of the team’s 7-3 victory over Chicago, the Pirates turn an 5-4-3 around-the-horn triple play when third baseman Josh Harrison fields Matt Szczur’s hard grounder, stepping on the bag to force Chris Valaika before firing the ball to second to Neil Walker to retire Mike Ott. The second baseman’s relay to first sacker Andrew Lambo completes the first triple killing in the 14-year history of PNC Park.

2014 – The Dodgers crush the Giants, 17 – 0, setting a record for most runs by a visiting team at AT&T Park. The Dodgers’ 24 hits are the most by any team at the ballpark. Zack Greinkepitches 6 scoreless innings and adds a double and homer, while Hanley Ramirez has four hits and Matt Kemp goes 3 for 3.

The Orioles move closer to clinching the AL East title with a doubleheader sweep of the Yankees, 2 – 1 and 5 – 0. But they also get bad news as slugger Chris Davis is handed a 25-game suspension for testing positive for amphetamines.

Giancarlo Stanton is hit in the face by a ball thrown by the Brewers’ Mike Fiers in the 5th inning. The Marlins’ best player suffers multiple facial fractures and broken teeth after lying motionless at home plate, bleeding profusely, for several minutes after the beaning and is carried away on a stretcher. Stanton was swinging on the pitch, so it is called a strike; pinch-hitter Reed Johnson completes the at-bat, and strikes out on a pitch that hits him on the hand, prompting both benches to clear. Marlins manager Mike Redmond and 3B Casey McGehee are both ejected for arguing umpire D.J. Reyburn’s decision to call both pitches strikes. In the 6th, Miami pitcher Anthony DeSclafani is also thumbed, for hitting Carlos Gomez on the left elbow in a gesture that is seen as retaliation; bench coach Rob Leary also gets the heave-ho since he is now the acting manager and both benches had been warned. For his part, Fiers leaves the game after striking out Johnson and issues an immediate emotional apology, denying any intention to hit Stanton. Incidentally, the Brewers win the game, 4 – 2.

Alex Cobb of the Rays makes a bid for a no-hitter against the Yankees, keeping them hitless until Chris Young doubles with one out and New York trailing 4 – 0 in the 8th. Pinch-hitter Martin Prado follows with a pinch homer off reliever Brad Boxberger that cuts the lead in half. Not content with having spoiled Cobb’s big night, Young then hits a walk-off three-run homer off Jake McGee in the 9th to give the Yanks a 5 – 4 win.

Cubs 3B prospect Kris Bryant is named the Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year after leading the minor leagues with 43 homers and a .661 slugging percentage between the AA Tennessee Smokies and AAA Iowa Cubs.

The Tigers are again even with the Royals in the AL Central following a 4 – 2 win over their rivals. Max Scherzer is the winner while J.D. Martinez and Rajai Davis both go deep. In the 9th, Tigers closer Joe Nathan escapes a two-on, none out jam with two strikeouts around picking Jarrod Dyson off second base.

2014 – A couple of franchise records are tied or broken in Miami’s 6 – 4 win over the Brewers. Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo records his 1,207th career strikeout, passing Ben Sheets as the franchise’s all-time leader, while for the Marlins, Giancarlo Stanton hits home run number 154, tying Dan Uggla as the team’s all-time leader. For the Brewers, it’s their 12th loss in 13 games, as they are slowly drifting out of postseason contention after occupying first place in the NL Central for most of the season.

The Yankees put on a special day to honor their captain, Derek Jeter, who is retiring at the end of the year after a brilliant 20-season career. A 45-minute ceremony prior to today’s game features surprise appearances by Hall of Famer Cal Ripken and NBA great Michael Jordan. However, the Royals go on to shut out the Yanks, 2 – 0, to dim their already slim postseason chances even further. This may not the last tribute to Jeter, as the Yankees are expected to retire his number 2 and put up a plaque in his name in Monument Park before the season ends.

2014 – After going 0-17 in Women’s Baseball World Cup history, Hong Kong finally wins. Netherlands starter Jessica Kroeskop walks the first seven batters and the Netherlands doesn’t recover in a 19-11 loss. Tsz-Chin Lauscores four and drives in four.
