Jose Abreu (.317, 36, 107), receiving all 30 first-place votes cast by the BBWAA, is unanimously named the American League Rookie of the Year. The 27 year-old first baseman joins Ozzie Guillen (1985), Ron Kittle (1983), Tommie Agee (1966), Gary Peters (1963), and Luis Aparicio (1956) as the sixth White Sox player to win the prestigious freshman award since its inception in 1947.

Marlins 3B Casey McGehee wins the National League Comeback Player of the Year Award while P Chris Young of the Mariners is the winner in the American League. McGehee came back from a strong year in Japan following a couple of disappointing seasons, while Young had seen his career stopped by a string of arm injuries.

The MIT graduate, the first Muslim to hold the position for any American professional sports franchise, joins the team’s overhauled front office, which also includes the recent hired Andrew Friedman as the president of baseball operations and Josh Byrnes as the senior vice president of baseball operations.
