2015 – On the last day on which trades can be made and the players involved still be eligible for postseason play, a number of deals get done. The Cubs acquire CF Austin Jackson from Seattle for a player to be named later, the Dodgers receive OF Justin Ruggiano, also from Seattle for a player to be named, the Giants get OF Alejandro De Aza from the Red Sox for minor leaguer Luis Ysla and the Royals get Jonny Gomes from Atlanta for SS Luis Valenzuela.

2015 – The insanely hot Blue Jays are at it again, demolishing the Tigers, 15 – 1. Edwin Encarnacion extends his hitting streak to 24 games, longest in the American League in three years, with a three-homer game in which he drives in 9 runs, tying a team record. Drew Hutchison is the winner in his return from a brief minor league assignment and is now 11-0 at home this season.

“Vin will be back for one more year (at least). God bless us, everyone” – JIMMY KIMMEL’s cue card message to the crowd. Team executive Magic Johnson, appearing on the Dodger Stadium video board, introduces Jimmy Kimmel to report “big, breaking news.” The ABC late-night television host, who waves to the fans without saying a word, displays a succession of cue cards, informing the Chavez Ravine crowd the 87 year-old Vin Scully will be returning to broadcast Dodgers games in 2016 for his 67th season.

After seven unproductive seasons, the Mariners, suffering through the second-longest postseason drought in baseball, fire general manager Jack Zduriencik. The former much-touted Milwaukee scouting director, named by Baseball America in 2007 as the first non-GM to receive its Major League Executive of the Year Award, was given a contract extension a year ago when Seattle would finish the season with 87 victories.

2015 – The Mariners fire General Manager Jack Zduriencik after 8 seasons during which the team failed to reach the postseason. He is replaced on an interim basis by his assistant, Jeff Kingston.

In their game against Seattle, the White Sox wear collared blue and white v-neck retro jerseys, reminding fans of the infamous look the team had starting with a few games in 1976 until 1981. The Throwback Thursday promotion at U.S. Cellular Field, features the unique uniforms designed by then-owner Bill Veeck, who believed his team, at the time, may not have been the greatest in baseball but could be the most stylish club in the major leagues.

2015 – Arbitrator Fredric Horowitz rules against Barry Bonds in his claim that teams colluded to keep him out of the game after he broke the all-time home run record in 2007.

Detroit’s Justin Verlander comes up just short in his bid for a third career no-hitter, as he has to settle for a one-hit, 5 – 0 shutout after Chris Iannetta leads off the 9th for the Angels with a double that lands on the left field foul line. Verlander retires the final three batters in order to earn only his second win of the year, after missing the start of the season to an injury and suffering from a lack of run support all season. It is the second time he loses a no-hit bid in the 9th inning.

David Price is a winner on his 30th birthday as the Blue Jays defeat the Rangers, 12 – 4 to extend their lead in the AL East to two games. Edwin Encarnacion hits a grand slam in the 6th inning to extend his hitting streak to 21 games, while Justin Smoak and Kevin Pillar also homer. The Rangers don’t help their cause by issuing 11 walks and 3 wild pitches in the game. It is already the 20th time Toronto has scored 10 or more runs in a game this year.
