Down 5 – 0 to the Tigers in a make-up game resulting from a rainout earlier this year, the Reds explode for 10 runs in the 6th inning to win, 12 – 5. Brandon Phillips has a triple and homer and drives in 4 runs in the inning, while Eugenio Suarez homers and doubles against his former team. New York overcomes a rare poor start by Jacob deGrom, who leaves after giving up 7 runs in 2 2/3 innings, including three-run homers by Ryan Howard and Domonic Brown and a solo shot by Cameron Rupp. Reliever Sean Gilmartin is the winner, while Hector Neris is tagged with the loss.

2015 – Josh Donaldson has a homer and 6 RBIs in leading the Blue Jays to a 15 – 3 demolition of the Angels. Combined with 3 RBIs in a 9 – 2 win the night before, Donaldson becomes the first major league player to reach the 100 RBI mark this year. Jose Bautista has 3 hits, including a two-run triple in a 7-run 4th inning, Edwin Encarnacion extends his hitting streak to 18 games and Chris Colabello also homers as Toronto beats up on rookie Andrew Heaney who gives up 8 runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Trading deadline acquisition Yoenis Cespedes continues to make his presence felt in the Mets line-up as he homers three times, including a grand slam, and collects 7 RBIs in a 14 – 9 win over the Rockies. He also has two other hits and drives a ball to the warning track in the 9th inning. Travis d’Arnaud and Michael Conforto also homer for New York.

Mike Fiers of the Astros pitches the fifth no-hitter of the season, defeating the Dodgers, 3 – 0, in an interleague contest. He strikes out 11 and retires the last 21 batters in a row. It is the first time in his career that he reaches the 9th inning in a game he has started.

Having been forced to use P Madison Bumgarner as a pinch-hitter in key situations the last of couple of days because they are short of position players, the Giants make a move by trading for OF Marlon Byrd from the Redsfor AA P Stephen Johnson.

A couple of pitchers throw one-hitters today. Alfredo Simon of the Tigers allows only a 5th-inning double to Rougned Odor in shutting out the Rangers, 4 – 0, his first career shutout and complete game. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s Chris Archer does the same, recording 11 strikeouts in the process, in shutting out the Astros, 1 – 0. His only blemish also comes in the 5th on a single by Colby Rasmus. It’s the first complete game by a Rays pitcher in 154 games, the last having come courtesy of Drew Smyly on August 22, 2014.
