2015 – The changes continue in Boston as the team announces that Dave Dombrowski, recently let go as General Manager of the Tigers, has been hired as Vice-President in charge of baseball operations. GM Ben Cheringtonhands over his resignation in the wake of the announcement.

2015 – Madison Bumgarner does it all as he throws a three-hit shutout to defeat the Nationals, 5 – 0. The Giants ace has 14 strikeouts, matching a career best, and also doubles and homers, his fourth long ball of the season, to improve to 14-6. For the Nats, it is a 6th straight loss, and they fall below .500 for the first time since May 6th, when they were 14-15.

2015 – The Red Sox put up a football score in defeating the Mariners, 22 – 10, at Fenway Park. The two teams combine for 7 homers and 39 hits. The Red Sox chase Felix Hernandez with 10 runs in 2 1/3 innings, then both teams go wild in their last two turns at bat, with 7 runs for Boston and 8 for Seattle. Jackie Bradley has a game for the ages, with 3 doubles, 2 homers, 5 runs and 7 RBIs, while Blake Swihart has 4 hits, 4 runs and 3 RBIs and Xander Bogaerts also has 4 hits. Lost in all the scoring, Boston starter Wade Miley has a solid game, giving up only 2 runs in 7 innings to earn the win. The Sox are the first big league team to have 15 runs and 20 hits in back-to-back games since they had done so in 1950, while the Mariners allow the most runs in team history.

The Padres’ Matt Kemp hits a ninth-inning triple to complete the cycle, making him the first player in the 35-year history of the franchise to accomplish the feat. The San Diego outfielder’s home run in the first, single in the third, and double in the seventh contribute to the team’s 9-5 victory over Colorado at Coors Field.

Red Sox manager John Farrell announces that he needs to undergo treatment for cancer and will take a leave of absence for the rest of the season. Bench coach Torey Lovullo takes over for him on an interim basis. Farrell explains that the form of lymphoma he is fighting is “highly curable” and that he plans to be back at the helm next year.

The Cubs also have a nice winning streak, as they notch their seventh straight, 9 – 2 over the Brewers. Kyle Schwarber, Dexter Fowler and Anthony Rizzo all homer in the 5th inning. Schwarber adds another long ball and Chris Denorfia also goes deep as Chicago wins its 13th in its last 14 games. Jon Lester is the beneficiary of the hitting spree.

For the second time this season, the Blue Jays have matched their all-time longest winning streak by getting their 11th straight victory, 4 – 2 over Oakland. They had a similar streak in June and are the first team since the 1954 Cleveland Indians to have two winning streaks of at least 11 games in the same season. Mark Buehrle improves to 13-5 and Ryan Goins hits a three-run homer off Jesse Chavez.
