The Cubs continue their hot start with a 5 – 3 win over the Reds in their home opener at a revamped Wrigley Field, improving to 6-1 on the year. However, things don’t look so great for a while as Brandon Finnegan has a no-hitter going until David Ross hits a two-out single in the 7th. Finnegan is taken out of the game and the Cubs feast on the Reds’ bullpen, scoring twice before the inning is over. A three-run homer by Addison Russell off Jumbo Diaz in the 8th seals the win.

The Cardinals set a record with three pinch-hit homers in a 7 – 4 win over the Braves. Aledmys Diaz, Greg Garcia and Jeremy Hazelbaker all go deep coming off the bench. For Diaz, it is his first homer in the majors.

Trevor Story is definitely the story of the early season: the Rockies SS hits two more homers today, to give him six in first four career games. He is the first player to go deep in his first four games, and he already was the first to do so in his first three. But the Padres, who extend their record for being held scoreless from the start of the season to 30 innings, finally get on the board in the 4th, and eventually break through for a 13 – 6 win, spoiling Colorado’s home opener. Matt Kemp and Melvin Upton hit homers, and Kemp and Yangervis Solarteeach drive in four runs.

2016 – The Cubs defeat the Diamondbacks, 14 – 6, but lose OF Kyle Schwarber as he tears his anterior cruciate ligament in an outfield collision with Dexter Fowler resulting in an inside-the-park homer by Jean Segura. He will return just in time to play in the World Series. For Chicago, Anthony Rizzo homers and drives in 6 runs in support of John Lackey.

Trevor Story becomes the first major leaguer to hit a home run in each of his first three major league games when he goes deep in the first inning of the Rockies’ 4-3 victory over the Diamondbacks at Chase Park. The 23 year-old shortstop is also the first rookie to have the round-trippers account for each of his first big league four hits.

For the first time in more than six decades, the Cubs and White Sox start the same season with two victories and no losses. The last time both Chicago teams were undefeated after two games occurred in 1951, two seasons before Ernie Banks played his rookie year.

2016 – Major League Baseball’s new rule on dangerous slides costs the Blue Jays a game, as with the bases loaded and the Jays trailing the Rays, 3 – 2, with one out in the 9th, Jose Bautista takes out 2B Logan Forsythe in an attempt to break up a double play. Forsythe throws the ball away, which seemingly allows two runs to score, but after a video review Bautista’s slide is ruled illegal and the Rays are awarded a game-ending twin killing.

Although he limits the Rangers to just one hit, Mariner right-hander Felix Hernandez loses for the first time on Opening Day, snapping a streak of six victories to start his team’s season. Seattle had the opportunity to become the first franchise in modern baseball history to win ten consecutive season openers, but sloppy defense allows three runs in the fifth inning of the club’s 3-2 defeat to Texas at Globe Life Park.
