The last time the Yankees had won a game while collecting a single hit was on July 10, 1914, when Charlie Mullen had the only safety in the second game of a doubleheader against Cleveland, shortened to 6 innings by darkness.

Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals improves to 9-0 on the year with a 10 – 2 win over the Cardinals, powered by a pinch-hit grand slam off the bat of Jayson Werth and a two-run homer by Wilson Ramos. Strasburg sets a new franchise record for most wins to start the year by a starting pitcher, besting the eight recorded by Pedro Martinez to start off his Cy Young Award-winning 1997 campaign. He also has 12 straight wins dating back to the previous September, which ties the franchise record shared by Dennis Martinez (1989) and Livan Hernandez (2005).

The Royals stage the biggest 9th-inning comeback in their history when they score 7 runs to defeat the White Sox, 8 – 7. With a 7 – 1 league, White Sox closer David Robertson seems to be cruising along when he strikes out Paulo Orlando to start off the bottom of the 9th, but Cheslor Cuthbert singles and Brett Eibner follows with a double. After the Royals have batted around, Eibner ends the game with a single off Tommy Kahnle, driving in Drew Butera with the winning run. One of the key hits of the rally is a two-run single by Whit Merrifield, and the win goes to Chien-Ming Wang, as players who barely contributed to last season’s World Series win do most of the damage for the Royals.

In the 3rd inning of a game against the Dodgers, Mets P Noah Syndergaard is ejected for throwing at Chase Utley, in apparent retaliation for Utley’s aggressive slide which injured Mets SS Ruben Tejada in last year’s NLDS. Umpire Adam Hamari also tosses Mets manager Terry Collins for arguing his decision, then Utley gets his revenge when he opens the score with a solo homer off Logan Verrett in the 6th and adds a grand slam off Hansel Robles in the 7th. The Dodgers hit five homers in total as they win the game, 9 – 1.

Major League Baseball hands out a suspension of 82 games to Braves OF Hector Olivera, following a domestic violence incident in April. It is by far the most severe penalty yet handed out under baseball’s new domestic violence policy.

The family of late Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn files a wrongful death lawsuit against the tobacco industry. Gwynn died in 2014 at age 44 of salivary gland cancer caused by using smokeless tobacco for over three decades.

In a marathon game, Yasiel Puig hits a two-run single with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the 17th inning, to lead the Dodgers to a 9 – 5 win over Padres­. Puig thereby atones for a baserunning mistake in the 9th, when he hit a lead-off single and stole second, but then failed to advance to third base when A.J. Ellis laid down a sacrifice bunt and was left stranded as a result. The game takes 5 hours and 47 minutes to complete. Everyone pitches in for Los Angeles, as P Clayton Kershaw is used as a pinch-hitter, and Ross Stripling, scheduled to start tomorrow, throws the last three innings to get credit for the win. Loser Luis Perdomo pitches four scoreless innings before finally breaking.
