There is some incredible talent in the MLB currently. From batters to infielders to catchers, the next few seasons are looking to have some very high-octane games.

One of the positions that are rife with talent is the pitcher. It seems that any player that gets up to throw is out there to show why they should be this year’s MVP.

In this article, we cover the best pitchers that are currently in the MLB and how they got this distinction.

Do you think any of these guys can win this year’s MVP? It’s only happened three times in the last 10 years (Ohtani 2021 AL, Kershaw 2014 NL, Verlander 2011 AL). If you’re confident they can, then you could find a sportsbook in your state that takes MVP bets. But if sports betting isn’t your thing, you can just sit back and enjoy your superior sports knowledge.

1. Jacob deGrom

Jacob deGrom is by far the best pitcher currently in the MLB. He began his baseball career as a shortstop in college but in his junior year was converted to a pitcher.

He was drafted by the New York Mets in the 9th round of the 2010 draft, making his debut with them in 2014, and has continued to play for them throughout his career.

He had an incredible rookie season winning NL Rookie of the Month twice (July and September) and the NL Rookie of the Year.

In 2017, deGrom hit his first home run and recorded his first stolen base. He won his first Cy Young award in 2018 and would go on to win it again in the following season.

He was named National League Pitcher of the Month in April 2021 following a franchise record 2.55 ERA.

In 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2021, deGrom was named MLB All-Star.

2. Gerrit Cole

Cole was initially drafted by the New York Yankees in 2008 but opted not to sign with them and instead go to university. 3 years later, he was the first overall selection by the Pittsburgh Pirates and would make his professional debut with them 2 years later in 2013.

In September of his rookie year, he would win the NL Rookie of the Month. In April 2015 he would then also win the NL Pitcher of the Month. That year in 2015 he would be named MLB All-Star for the first time, a feat he would achieve again in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.

He was traded to the Houston Astros in 2018. During his time with them, he vastly increased the spin rate of his fastballs and aimed more for the top of the strike zone.

Cole signed with the Yankees in 2020 with a 9-year $324 million contract, the largest in major league history for a pitcher.

3. Max Scherzer

Scherzer has played for a lot of teams during his career. He was first drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006 and made his professional debut with them in 2008.  He would stay with them until 2009 when he was traded to the Detroit Tigers. He would stay with the Tigers until 2015 when he agreed to a contract with the Washington Nationals. He was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021 and stayed with them for 1 season before signing a deal with the New York Mets in 2022.

In 2016, he became the youngest-ever pitcher, to have defeated all 30 MLB teams. He also won the Cy Young award that year, he had also previously won it in 2013 and would win it again in 2017.

With the Washinton Nationals in 2019, Scherzer won his first World Series Championship. Throughout his career, he would be named All-Star 8 times, from 2013 to 2019 and then again in 2021.

4. Walker Buehler

Buehler was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015 and would make his professional debut with them in 2017.

He would only play 8 games with the Dodgers in his first season but in 2018 he would pitch in a combined no-hitter.

1 year later in 2019, he would be named All-Star. He would also be named All-Star in 2021.

He helped the Dodgers win the shortened 2020 World Series.

5. Zack Wheeler

Wheeler was initially drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2008 and played for their minor league team before being traded to the Mets. He made his Mets debut in the 2013-14 season where he was the highlight.

He tore his ulnar collateral ligament in 2015 and wouldn’t return until 2017.

In 2020 he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies and had a huge comeback in 2021 becoming the 3rd pitcher to strike out 10 or more batters in 3 consecutive starts. That year he was named All-Star for the first time.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to talented pitchers, the current roster is one of the best we’ve seen in a while.

Their talents are able to keep even the most disappointing of seasons entertaining and we can’t wait to see what they will achieve in the future.
