Adam Dunn 5th fastest to hit 300

On July 4, 2009 — In his 4,145th big league at-bat, Adam Dunn hits his 300th career home run in Washington’s 5-3 win over Atlanta at Nationals Park. The 29-year-old left fielder is the fifth quickest player to reach the milestone, behind only Babe Ruth (3,830), Mark McGwire (3,837), Ralph Kiner (3,883), and Harmon Killebrew (3,928).

The Angels lose their ace, Jered Weaver, after only 12 pitches when he is forced to leave his start against the Yankees with a back injury in the 1st inning, but they hold on for a hard-fought 9 – 8 win, capped by Mark Trumbo’s walk-off home run. The win puts the Angels at .500 for the first time since April 9th. Howie Kendrick and Kendry Morales drive in 3 runs each and Mike Trout homers to lead the offense. Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira homer for New York, and Russell Martin hits a two-run double in the 7th to tie the game at 8-all, but Trumbo’s 9th-inning homer off Cory Wade ends it, giving struggling closer Jordan Walden his first win of the year.

Rogers Hornsby sets a new National League single-season home run record with his 28th, eclipsing a 38-year-old mark set by Ed Williamson of the Chicago White Stockings in 1884. Hornsby’s 6th-inning solo shot off Jimmy Ring provides St. Louis’s sole means of support in this 9 – 1 Philly rout.

August 5, 1922

Cubs manager Frank Selee resigns and is replaced by Frank Chance, who is elected manager in a narrow vote among the players. Selee, suffering from tuberculosis, had not been making road trips, and Chance has been serving as road manager. Selee, who fashioned the team that will dominate the second half of the decade, retires to Colorado. The visiting Phillies overcome a 5 – 0 deficit to down Chicago, 7 – 6, in 11 innings.
