Passing the mark of 68 established by Christy Mathewson (Giants – 1913) and Randy Jones (Padres – 1976), Braves right-hander Greg Maddux sets the National League record for consecutive innings without allowing a walk as he pitches six innings without a giving up a base on balls to extend the new record to 70.1 innings. The major league record is 84.1 innings without a free pass, established in 1962 by A’s sinker-slider hurler Bill Fischer.

Returning to the major leagues after a stint with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League, Jose Canseco starts as the designated hitter for the Chicago White Sox. The former All-Star, who has 446 career home runs (23rd all time), didn’t get any offers after being released by the Anaheim Angels in the spring.
