For the second straight game, the Virgin Islands fall a run shy of the winning their first game since the 1978 Central American and Caribbean Games. After falling 1 – 0 to Panama in their first game of the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games, they lead Guatemala, 5 – 2, going into the bottom of the 9th only to lose, 7 – 6, in 11 innings.

In San Francisco, Dolph Camilli’s brother, Frankie, dies after a boxing match yesterday with heavyweight Max Baer. Fighting under the name Frankie Campbell, he has his neck broken in the 5th round by a Baer punch and never recovers. Camilli, a star for Sacramento (Pacific Coast League), will win the NL MVP in 1941.

August 26, 1930

The Phillies take a 2-1 lead in the other NLDS, beating St. Louis, 3 – 2, on a three-run pinch homer by Ben Francisco off Jaime Garcia in the 7th inning. The Cardinals manage to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the 8th, but Ryan Madson comes in to induce Allen Craig to hit into an inning-ending double play that ends the threat. Cole Hamels is the winner.
