On July 24, 1970 — In a surprise move, the New York Mets’ Tommie Agee steals home with the bases loaded in the 10th to give the Mets a 2 – 1 win over the visiting Dodgers.
The bottom of the 10th was a wild inning for the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets. Jim Brewer came into pitch. Tug McGraw singled to center to lead off the frame; On a sacrifice bunt attempt, Agee reached on a fielder’s choice [McGraw to second was safe at second on a Billy Grabarkewitz error. However Weis now running for McGraw was picked off second (pitcher to second); Agee then stole second and advanced to third on a Brewer wild pitch, Bud Harrelson then struck out. Brewer clearly wild then walked Ken Singleton walked and pinch hitter Donn Clendenon walked.
Cleon Jones facing brewer with a 1- 1 count, Agee went and when he got near home yelled to Jones, “Lookout. lookout.” Agee barrelled across the plate, knocking over Los Angeles catcher Bill Haller and the home plate umpire Shag Crawford as Jones faked swinging at the 1-1 pitch.
“I’m sure Brewer was surprised,” Agee said afterward. “But I felt I would make it. I wouldn’t have gone if I didn’t think so.”
Gil Hodges, the Mets manager, however, wasn’t at all surprised. “I don’t think you’re ever surprised when Tommie Goes. He’s a very daring base- runner.”
“I saw him coming out of the corner of my eye.” Jones said, and when he passed the halfway mark, I knew’ he was coming. I heard him yell.”
Agee called to Jones because in a similar steal attempt in last year’s playoff against Atlanta. Jones didn’t see him and drilled a line drive which just missed the startled Agee.
