Al Lopez Day in Tampa bay

Hall of Fame Manager Casey Stengel jokingly wants former fellow Hall of Famer White Sox Manager Al Lopez out of the rocking chair so he can have a turn, but Al refuses to move. It was one of many gifts from the people of Tampa, Florida on March 23, 1970 at the ballpark that was named after him on Al Lopez Day at Al Lopez Field. The senor was born in Tampa, would be a lifelong resident and also pass away in Tampa.

Frank Howard, who is not playing regularly for the Tigers, hits a 3-run homer off Dave McNally of the Orioles for a Detroit victory. It is his 13th career four-bagger off his favorite pitcher. He had hit one with the Rangers on July 18th, and 11 with the Senators from 1965 to 1971.

The Dodgers trade P Aaron Harang to the Rockies in return for C Ramon Hernandez. Colorado’s motivation for the deal is purely financial: they immediately designate Harang for assignment in order to trade him elsewhere.
