On September 30, 1956 — Al Lopez, manager of the Indians since 1951, resigns and is replaced by Kerby Farrell. Lopez, who won 470 while losing 354 for a .570 percentage, had one pennant and five 2nd-place finishes in his 6 years at the helm.
