On June 13 1971, Alex Johnson accuses his Angel teammate Chico Ruiz of waving a gun at him in the clubhouse while the game is being played, an eventual 5-2 loss to Washington at Anaheim Stadium. Although Ruiz denies the incident and the club finds no evidence of a gun, Johnson, not known for his diplomacy, adamantly claims he was threatened with a firearm by the infielder during an argument they had after being used as pinch-hitters in the contest.
The Athletics try to slow the Browns down by loading the base paths with sand. St. Louis captain Charles Comiskey refuses to play and even helps the grounds crew remove the sand. The Browns win the two games, 18 – 1 and 11 – 3, with a total of 14 stolen bases.

In their first official game against an all-men’s team, the Colorado Silver Bullets are defeated by the Northern League All-Stars, 19 – 0. The Bullets are outhit, 21-2, and commit six errors in the field. They become the first women’s team to play a men’s professional team. Leon Durham hits two homers and Oil Can Boyd makes the start for the All-Stars.
