On June 13 1971, Alex Johnson accuses his Angel teammate Chico Ruiz of waving a gun at him in the clubhouse while the game is being played, an eventual 5-2 loss to Washington at Anaheim Stadium. Although Ruiz denies the incident and the club finds no evidence of a gun, Johnson, not known for his diplomacy, adamantly claims he was threatened with a firearm by the infielder during an argument they had after being used as pinch-hitters in the contest.
For the second game in a row, the Reds’ Gary Redus hits a leadoff home run. And for the second game in a row the Reds lose to the Braves. Today it is 4 – 2; yesterday, it was 5 – 2.

The Bronx Bomber outfielder, claiming he “no longer has it” due to age and injuries, ends his thirteen-year career with a lifetime .325 BA and 361 home runs, rejecting owner Dan Topping’s $100,000 offer to play next season.

1998 – Shortly after beating Jorge Fabregas in an arbitration case, Arizona owner Jerry Colangelo stuns the catcher – and fellow owners – by signing him to a 2-year, $2.9 million contract, which includes a significant raise over the arbitration salary in the first year.

Nolan Ryan strikes out his 100th batter, reaching that mark for a record 23rd year in a row. He subdues the Orioles, 6 – 2, and passes Phil Niekro as number 12 on the all-time win list with 319. Juan Gonzalez helps with a 450-foot homer to center field, the longest yet at Camden Yards.
