The news is not all good for the Dodgers, however, as they place 3B Casey Blake on the disabled listwith a staph infection in his left elbow; he undergoes surgery and won’t be back for a month.

Ken Griffey, Jr. of the Seattle Mariners breaks his own major league record for home runs hit through May by connecting for his 23rd of the season in an 11 – 10 loss to Minnesota. Griffey breaks the mark he set in 1994 with 22 homers. In the same game, Mariners second baseman Joey Cora extends his hitting streak to 22 games, to set a team record and tie the American League mark for switch-hitters.

Barry Bonds becomes the first player in major league history to win the Most Valuable Player Award five times. The 38 year-old Giant left fielder, who also won the award with the Pirates in 1990 and ’92 and with San Francisco in 1993 and last season, was the National League’s batting champion with a .370 average and broke 1941 Ted Williams’ on-base percentage record with an amazing .582 OBP.

Derek Jeter ties the New York Yankees franchise record for hits held by Lou Gehrig, with his 2,721st hit in the 7th against the Rays. He will pass Gehrig in two days. In the game, Jorge Posada belts a three-run pinch homer in the 8th to give the Yanks a 4 – 2 win. The Rays, the AL East champions last year, have now lost 8 straight and are almost out of the playoff race.
