Anibal Sanchez wins the largest amount ever given to a starting pitcher who went to arbitration

On February 6, 2012 — An arbitration panel rules in favor of 27 year-old Anibal Sanchez (8-9, 3.67), awarding the Marlin right-hander with a record-breaking $8 million salary for this season. The decision, which puts aside the team’s counteroffer of $6.9 million, represents the largest amount ever given to a starting pitcher who went to arbitration.

This may have spurred the July 23, 2012: Trade by the Miami Marlins, he was traded with Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers for Rob Brantly, Brian Flynn and Jacob Turner. Sanchez will have his best season a year later, posting a 2.57 ERA, won 14 games and posted a war of 6.5 and came in 4th in the Cy Young voting, leading the Tigers to the ALCS loss to the Boston Red Sox.

His toughest competition for the Cy Young was teammate, Max Scherzer who won the award in a unanamous vote.
