A’s manager Connie Mack, who is 84 years old, challenges Clark Griffith, the 78 year-old owner of the Senators, to a foot race from third base to home plate.

On April 4, 1948 –The foot race of the century, in a 90-foot sprint between Connie Mack and Clark Griffith, ended in a dead heat today. Commissioner A. B. (Happy) Chandler, who officiated at the momentous track contest, declared the match a deadlock when the 85-year-old Griffith, owner of the Philadelphia Athletics, and 78-year-old Griffith, owner of the Washington Senators, crossed the finish line abreast. The race was staged with all the fanfare of a major event. It was held prior to an exhibition game between the A’s and Senators. The fans were assembled in the Orlando park when an ambulance came roaring through the left field gate and halted at home plate. Out stepped a doctor and two nurses followed by Mack and Griffith. The two and Chandler made brief speeches at home plate. men Nick Altrock. coach of the Senators escorted them to third base and fired a cap pistol to start them on the 90-foot course to home plate. Griffith stepped off sprightly enough and the long-limbed Mack, his arms flailing at his side, skip ped along in stride until they reached the end of the course.
