On July 31, 1936 — At the Polo Grounds, the Giants manage just four hits off Chicago’s Larry French and lose, 3 – 1. The Terrymen’s only tally is a homer by Hank Leiber. The loss leaves the front-running Cubs a game ahead of the Cards.
Brandon Phillips, after a 50 homerless at-bat drought, hits his 30th home run of the season to become the 31st member of the 30-30 club, which now includes Mets third baseman David Wright and Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who also accomplished the feat this season. The 26 year-old infielder joins Alfonso Soriano (Yankees, 2002) as the only other second baseman to reach the plateau, and the third Reds player (Eric Davis, 1987 and Barry Larkin, 1996) to have hit 30 home runs and stolen 30 bases in the same season.

1962 – Roberto Clemente’s home run almost reaches Forbes Field’s right-field roof, providing Pittsburgh with an early 3-run lead over Houston which starter Vern Law will not relinquish. As Les Biederman of the Pittsburgh Press recounts: “Roberto Clemente almost made history Saturday, missing by a foot or so of being the first right-handed batter to hit a ball to the right field roof. Clemente’s homer in the first inning landed against the facing of the right field roof, a tremendous blast as it was.” Bobby Bragan, formerly Pittsburgh’s manager but now working for Houston, provides his own account: “The ball was within a foot or so of landing on top of the roof and perhaps two or three feet in fair territory. It probably was the longest ball ever hit to that field by a right-handed batter.”

Cleveland IF Bobby Avila hits three home runs going 5 for 6 against the Red Sox. His 15 total bases will stand as a team record until surpassed by Rocky Colavito in 1959. Before today, Avila had hit just one homer against the Bosox. Cleveland outslugs Boston to win, 14 – 8, as Early Wynn earns the complete game win.
