Mike Hessman of the Toledo Mud Hens connects for his 400th minor league homer, against Scott Diamond of the Rochester Red Wings in an International League contest. Hessman is only the 8th player to reach the mark, and the 4th to do it entirely in U.S.-based leagues, as the top four minor league home run hitters of all time all spent the bulk of their career in Mexico.

The Tigers see their 11-game road winning streak ended after a very long day. Having been delayed in leaving Boston, MA, they arrive in Cleveland only three hours before game time, then extend the game when J.D. Martinez hits a pinch homer in the 9th to require extra innings. However, Michael Brantley hits a walk-off homer off Al Alburquerque in the 10th to end the game, 5 – 4.

The Pirates win for the first time in the Bronx in 54 years – since the 1960 World Series – when they beat the Yankees, 5 – 3, in the second game of a doubleheader, after losing the opener, 4 – 3. Starling Marte and Josh Harrison homer for the Bucs in the nitecap, after Mark Teixeira gets a couple of early RBIs in the opener as the Yankees hand Charlie Morton his 6th loss against no wins despite a 101 ERA+.

Danny Duffy pitches the best game of his career, taking a perfect game into the 7th inning before Adam Jones singles with two outs. His solid outing is necessary to make a 1st-inning Royals run stand up for a 1 – 0 win. Duffy is taken out of the game after allowing a lead-off single in the 8th, and the Orioles manage to load the bases in the 9th against Greg Holland before Nelson Cruz strikes out to end the game.

The Diamondbacks set club records with 21 hits and 13 extra-base hits in defeating the Dodgers, 18 – 7. The D-Backs score 7 times in the 2nd as they chase Clayton Kershaw from the mound, but the Dodgers charge back with a five-run inning in the 6th. Paul Goldschmidt has two homers and 6 RBIs, including one off C Drew Butera, who makes his second pitching appearance of the week. For Los Angeles, Yasiel Puig hits a two-run homer off Chase Anderson in the 3rd inning, extending his hitting streak to 16 games, and his streak of games with an extra-base hit and an RBI to 8, a club record.

Penn State turns two triple plays in a loss to Michigan State University. They become only the second NCAA Division I team to turn two triple killings in a game, following Gonzaga University in 2006.

In his first major league outing, Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom does something no other member of the pitching staff has been able to do yet this season: get a hit. His 3rd-inning single off Chase Whitley of the Yankees breaks a record 0-for-64 drought by Mets pitchers at the plate this season. DeGrom, who had been an infielder his first couple of years in college before becoming a pitcher, also pitches very well, allowing 1 run in 7 innings, but is a hard-luck loser, 1 – 0, as Whitley, Dellin Betances, Adam Warren and David Robertson combine on a three-hit shutout. Whitley, who is also making his big league debut, gives up no runs in 4 2/3 innings and also collects his first hit, off deGrom.

Johnny Cueto shuts out the Padres on three hits as the Reds win, 5 – 0. Cueto has now pitched at least 7 innings and given up 2 runs or less in all 9 of his starts this season; to find a pitcher with a longer such streak to start a year, one has to go all the way back to 1909 when Harry Krause did it for 10 games for the Philadelphia Athletics in the heart of the deadball era.

Masahiro Tanaka pitches his first major league shutout as the Yankees defeat the Mets, 4 – 0. The Japanese off-season signee is now 6-0 with a 2.17 ERA after 8 starts in the majors. The Yankees’ win follows 6 straight losses to the Mets, dating back to last season.

2014 – Two pitchers with long winless streaks face-off in tonight’s game between the Dodgers and Marlins. Josh Beckett records his first win since the 2012 season as he gives up a run in 6 2/3 innings in a 7 – 1 Dodgers win. His opponent, Jacob Turner extends his streak to 16 starts and is 0-10 on the road for his career, in spite of an ERA under 4.00.
