Yu Darvish comes within one out of throwing a no-hitter as the Rangers’ ace allows a single to David Ortiz with two outs in the 9th. Darvish then comes out and Alexi Ogando retires Mike Napoli to end the game with Texas winning, 8 – 0, over the Red Sox. Ortiz had broken up Darvish’s bid for a perfect game two innings earlier when his pop fly to shallow right dropped between 2B Rougned Odor and RF Alex Rios in the 7th; Rios was charged with an error on that play, however, and Darvish allowed a couple of walks before facing Ortiz again. It’s a case of déjà vu for Darvish, as he has previously come within an out of a perfect game on April 2, 2013. On May 14th, Major League Baseball will overturn official scorer Steve Weller’s ruling on Ortiz’s 7th-inning blooper, calling it a hit as well.

In the 6th inning of today’s game between the Orioles and Rays, Brad Boxberger is called in relief of David Price with nobody out and the bases full of baserunners. Nine pitches later, Boxberger has struck out the side, in what is an unprecedented feat, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Orioles are still winners, 3 – 1.

The Blue Jays hit five homers in defeating the Phillies, 12 – 6, completing a three-game sweep. Edwin Encarnacion hits two of the long balls, including the 200th of his career, with Juan Francisco, Colby Rasmus and Adam Lind also connecting in support of starter R.A. Dickey.

The Pirates record a walk-off win of an unprecedented type, as they need to wait for the result of a video review to begin celebrating. With two outs and the score tied 1 – 1 in the bottom of the 9th against the Giants at PNC Park, Starling Marte bangs a drive off the right field wall. When 2B Ehire Adrianza’s relay skips through 3B Pablo Sandoval’s legs, Marte races for home, but umpire Quinn Wolcott calls him out. Manager Clint Hurdleimmediately asks for a review, and one minute and 15 seconds later, crew chief Gerry Davis gives the safe sign, validating the run and ending the game.

The Rockies continue to sport the best offense in the majors as they defeat the Rangers, 8 – 2, in an interleague contest. Nolan Arenado extends his hitting streak to 25 games with a homer off Martin Perez in the 2nd, while Troy Tulowitzki adds two homers and now has 9 on the year. The Rockies also bang out 7 doubles as Jordan Lyles, an afterthought in the starting rotation when the season began, improves to 4-0.

Jon Lester strikes out a career-high 15 and allows only one hit over 8 innings as the Red Sox defeat the A’s, 6 – 3. A grand slam by Jonny Gomes and solo homers by David Ortiz and David Ross account for all of Boston’s runs.

Three doubleheaders are played today, a result of recent inclement weather, and they all end in sweeps. The Dodgers win both ends of a twinbill for the first time since 2002 in defeating the Twins, 9 – 4 and 4 – 3. The second game takes 12 innings before Drew Butera and Scott Van Slyke homer off Brian Duensing, but in the bottom of the inning, Kenley Jansen loads the bases with none out before escaping with his 11th save. The first game begins just past noon at Target Field, and the second ends at before 11:22 pm on what was supposed to be a getaway day for the Dodgers.

In the other interleague doubleheader, the Orioles win two from the Pirates, 5 – 1 and 6 -5, with Matt Wieters hitting a 10th-inning walk-off homer in the nitecap; 3B Manny Machado makes his return to the field in the second game after missing the first month of the season. Finally, the Rays defeat Boston twice in Fenway Park, 2 – 1 and 6 – 5, as Red Sox pitchers issue 18 walks in the two games.
