The Anaheim first baseman’s ten total bases, however, yield only two RBIs in the Halos’ 12-6 victory over Toronto at the Rogers Centre.

2013 – In a rare highlight for the Nationals this season, Gio Gonzalez pitches a one-hitter and is backed by five homers as the team rolls to an easy 9 – 0 win over the Mets. The Nats start off with a bang as Denard Span and Ryan Zimmerman greet Mets starter Carlos Torres with back-to-back long balls. Pinch-hitter Zach Lutz has the Mets’ only hit, a soft single that lands on the first base foul line to open the 7th.

Juan Uribe homers in each of his first three trips to the plate in the Dodgers’ 8-1 victory over Arizona. Los Angeles goes yard six times in the Chavez Ravine contest, falling two shy of the franchise record established in 2002.

The Reds complete a three-game sweep of the Dodgers with a 3 – 2 win capped by Ryan Hanigan’s game-ending double in the 9th, scoring Zack Cozart from first base. The Reds had last swept the Dodgers at home back in 1992.

2013 – The Cardinals move back into first place in their see-saw battle with the Pirates for the lead in the NL Central, winning 5 – 0 at home over the Bucs behind the pitching of Adam Wainwright. Wainwright comes back from being clubbed in his last two outings, when he gave up a total of 15 runs, to pitch 7 scoreless innings, while another player who has been struggling, 3B David Freese, contributes a home run.

Facing his former team, Yusmeiro Petit retires the first 26 Diamondbacks he faces in the Giants’ 3-0 victory at AT&T Park. The 28 year-old right-hander’s bid for perfection is spoiled by pinch-hitter Eric Chavez, who strokes a line drive single to right field with two outs in the ninth inning.

The Red Sox score 9 runs starting in the 7th inning, coming back from an 8 – 3 deficit to defeat the Yankees, 12 – 8. Mike Napoli’s grand slam is the key blow of the 7th, tying the score against Nook Logan, then Shane Victorino hits a two-run shot in the 8th to put the Sox ahead to stay.

Yusmeiro Petit of the Giants comes within one strike of a perfect game against the Diamondbacks at AT&T Park. Eric Chavez hits a single with two outs in the 9th to deprive Petit of his place in history, but he retires the next batter, A.J. Pollock, to end up with a 3 – 0 one-hitter.

2013 – The Red Sox win a wild 9 – 8 game over the Yankees. Trailing 7 – 2 in the 7th, the Yankees take the lead with a six-run inning, but Boston ties the game in the top of the 9th when Mike Napoli starts a rally with two out and nobody on against Mariano Rivera. Quintin Berry is inserted as a pinch-runner and promptly steals second and moves to third on C Austin Romine’s wild throw, before Stephen Drew’s single drives him in to tie the game. In the bottom of the 9th, Alfonso Soriano is thrown out in an ill-fated steal attempt. Jacoby Ellsbury singles and steals second in the 10th before Shane Victorino drives him in for the deciding run. Craig Breslow is the winner over Joba Chamberlain.
