The Yankees’ CC Sabathia is ejected in the 6th inning of his team’s 12 – 1 win over Tampa Bay, for throwing at Jesus Sucre in apparent retaliation for Andrew Kittredge throwing a pitch near C Austin Romine’s head in the top of the inning. The ejection is literally costly, as it leaves CC two innings short of 155 on the year, a total which would have netted him a bonus of $500,000 had he reached it. The gesture will also result in a five-game suspension for Sabathia, to be served at the start of the 2019 season. The Yankees will decide in December to pay him the bonus anyway.

German Marquez of the Rockies ties a modern major league record by striking out the first 8 batters he faces in a 14 – 0 win over the Phillies. Marquez now shares the mark with Jim Deshaies and Jacob deGrom. Colorado has won six straight and leapfrogs over the Dodgers in a tight NL West race.

The Cubs and Brewers both clinch a postseason slot with wins today, although which of the two teams will finish first in the NL Central and which will host the Wild Card Game remains up in the air, as only a half-game separates them.

Max Scherzer strikes out 10 batters in a 9 – 4 win by Washington over the Marlins. This allows him to reach the 300-strikeout mark for the first time of his career, as he leads the majors in Ks and the National League with 18 wins in a bid for a fourth Cy Young Award.

En route to winning 108 games this season, the Red Sox break a franchise record with their 106th victory, beating the Orioles, who becomes the sixth team in American League history to lose 111 games. Boston’s 6-2 triumph at home surpasses the 1912 team’s total of 105 wins recorded in their first season at Fenway Park.

The young Atlanta Braves clinch the NL East title with a 5 – 3 win over the Phillies. This caps a remarkable season in which the Braves inserted themselves among the league’s best teams ahead of schedule after completing a thorough rebuilding.

The Gurriel brothers become the first set of brothers to have multiple-homer games on the same day. Lourdes Gurriel of the Blue Jays goes deep in the 1st and 4th innings in an 11 – 3 loss to the Rays, and older brother Yuli Gurriel hits a grand slam in the 1st and has a two-run shot in the 3rd as Houston defeats the Angels, 11 – 3, to clinch a postseason slot.
