Pierzynski and Geovany Soto homered in the 9th in a 4 – 3 win and yesterday, it was Leonys Martin who ended the game on a three-run shot in the 10th. In 1999, the Diamondbacks had swept the Expos with three walk-off blasts, the only other recorded instance of such a series.

In a relatively staid last day of trading before the deadline, the Orioles acquire P Bud Norris from Houston for L.J. Hoes and Josh Hader, the Diamondbacks send P Ian Kennedy to San Diego for Joe Thatcher and Matt Stites, while the Royals pick up OF Justin Maxwell from Houston for P Kyle Smith.

Today’s deals are highlighted by a three-team trade that sees P Jake Peavy go from the White Sox to the Red Sox; Boston then sends rookie SS Jose Iglesias to Detroit, which is looking for insurance at the position in fear that starter Jhonny Peralta will be suspended as a result of the Biogenesis scandal. Detroit completes the deal by sending young OF Avisail Garcia to Chicago, while four other players change uniforms as well. In other pre-trading deadline deals, the A’s acquire IF Alberto Callaspo from the Angels for Grant Green, while the Indians acquire lefty reliever Marc Rzepczynski from St. Louis.

Andre Rienzo becomes the first major leaguer born and raised in Brazil and the second born there after Yan Gomes. Rienzo, fresh off a no-hitter for the Charlotte Knights, allows 3 unearned runs in 7 solid innings against the Indians but Donnie Veal and Matt Lindstrom blow it for the White Sox.

The Pirates take back first place in the NL Central by sweeping a doubleheader against the Cardinals. The Bucs win the opener, 2 – 1, in 11 innings, then take the nitecap, 6 – 0, as Brandon Cumpton tosses 7 scoreless innings in only his fourth big league start. The Cards have now lost 6 straight to fall out of first place.

The Rays re-take first place in the AL East from Boston with a 2 – 1 win in a make-up game at Fenway Park. On a controversial play in the 8th, pinch-runner Daniel Nava appears to slide under the tag of catcher Jose Molinawith the game-tying run, but umpire Jerry Meals thinks otherwise. Manager John Farrell is ejected for arguing the call; after the game, Meals recognizes that he was wrong.

Jason Giambi (42 years, six months, 22 days) becomes the oldest major leaguer to stroke a walk-off homer, pinch-hitting a two-run blast off Ramon Troncoso deep beyond the center-field wall in the Indians’ 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the White Sox at Progressive Field. Hank Aaron (42 years, five months, seven days) previously held the distinction with his game-winning round-tripper against Texas on July 11, 1976.

The Cubs beat the Giants, 2 – 1. The only players with more than one hit are opposing starters Travis Wood (2 for 3, HR) and Tim Lincecum (2 for 2). That feat last happened on June 21, 1963.

Yasiel Puig adds another chapter to his storybook rookie season, hitting a walk-off homer off Curtis Partch of the Reds in the 11th inning to break a scoreless tie and give the Dodgers a 1 – 0 win.

2013 – For the first time since September 4, 1965, three American League games end on 1 – 0 scores. Chris Archer of the Rays throws a two-hitter at the Yankees while Justin Masterson of the Indians and Wade Davis of the Royals need bullpen help for their victories, over Texas and Chicago, respectively.
