The Yankees take sole possession of first place in the AL East with a 9 – 6 win over the Red Sox, their 17th win in their last 18 games. Boston has a 6 – 5 lead going into the bottom of the 8th, but relievers Matt Barnesand Craig Kimbrel get tagged for four runs, on a two-run triple by Brett Gardner and a homer by Aaron Judge. Gardner, who was hitting just .198 coming into the game, adds a pair of doubles and scores three runs.

James Paxton of the Mariners becomes only the second-ever Canadian-born pitcher to throw a no-hitter, after Dick Fowler in 1945, turning the trick against the Blue Jays in a 5 – 0 win. The three no-hitters pitched so far this season have been accomplished in three different countries: the United States, Mexico and Canada, and no Canadian pitcher had ever pitched one on Canadian soil before Paxton. In what is overall an awful day for the Blue Jays, closer Roberto Osuna is arrested in the early hours of the morning on charges of assault against a woman and is immediately placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball.

At the other end of the pitching spectrum, Dylan Bundy of the Orioles has just about as poor a start as can be, as he gives up four homers, two walks and a single while retiring nobody. All seven Royals baserunners come to score on their way to putting up 10 1st-inning runs. Bundy is the first pitcher ever to give up four homers without recording an out, as Jorge Soler, Mike Moustakas, Salvador Perez and Alex Gordon all take him deep before he is mercifully removed from the game. Kansas City wins handily, 15 – 7.

The Yankees are on fire as they record their 15th win in their last 16 games, 7 – 4 over the Indians, thanks to a three-run walk-off homer by rookie Gleyber Torres off Dan Otero. Domingo German, making his first major league start in place of an injured Jordan Montgomery, begins things with six hitless innings for New York, before being removed for having reached his pitch count limit.

In pitching a perfect 9th inning in a 6 – 5 win against the Rangers, Craig Kimbrel of the Red Sox becomes the 29th man to record 300 saves. He is the youngest to reach the mark at 29 (Francisco Rodriguez was 31) and has needed the fewest games, 494 (Mariano Rivera had done so in 537 games) and save opportunities (330, compared to 335 for Joe Nathan) to do so.

Coach Mike Martin of Florida State University records the 1.976th victory of his illustrious career when his charges defeat Clemson University in an NCAA Division I game today. He passes Augie Garrido, who died just a few months ago, as the winningest coach ever at that level.

Four Dodgers pitchers combine to throw the first no-hitter ever pitched outside the United States or Canada. In a game played at Estadio de Beisbol Monterrey in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Walker Buehler pitches six no-hit innings and is followed on the mound by Tony Cingrani, Yimi Garcia and Adam Liberatore who toss a hitless inning each to complete the feat. The Dodgers defeat the Padres, 4 – 0.

Albert Pujols of the Angels becomes the 32nd member of the 3,000 hit club with a 5th-inning single off Mike Leake of the Mariners. Pujols is only the fourth player to combine 3,000 hits and 600 homers, after Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Alex Rodriguez.

The Mariners announce that they have released 44-year-old OF Ichiro Suzuki, who is hitting .205 with no extra-base hits in 15 games and that he will stay on as a special assistant to the Chairman. He insists it is not the end of his career, as he plans to try out for the team again in 2019. “I’ll retire when I start using a cane”, as he puts it.

On what was supposed to be a rest day, the Indians and Blue Jays split an interminable doubleheader, scheduled to replace two games postponed by weather in April. In the first game, which was originally scheduled to take place on Jackie Robinson Day, the two teams wear uniform number 42 and Toronto wins a wild contest, 13 – 11, thanks to a 11th-inning grand slam by Yangervis Solarte, who has a five-hit game. That game starts after a two-hour rain delay, then Cleveland wins the nitecap, 13 – 4, thanks to a nine-run 5th inning. The win is the 1,500th of Terry Francona’s managerial career.
