There are other unusual plays in games today. In Kansas City, the Royals’ David DeJesus hits a long drive that bounces off the fence and back onto the field. Twins right fielder Michael Cuddyer, convinced the ball went into the stands, does not chase it as DeJesus races around the bases for an inside-the-park homer; the Twins still win, 8 – 3. And at Chase Field, the Phillies’ Jayson Werth hits a high fly ball to right field in the 4th inning; Diamondbacks RF Chris Young is camped under it, but lets the ball drop to the ground and picks it up immediately. While Young is vainly trying to convince umpire Dale Scott that he did indeed make the catch, Werth does not stop running and makes it all the way home on a rare four-base error. In spite of the embarrassment, Arizona wins, 7 – 4.

The Pirates suffer the most lopsided loss in team history, falling 20 – 0 to the Brewers, who complete a three-game sweep in which they outscored Pittsburgh 36 – 1. Milwaukee collects 25 hits; Ryan Braun, Prince Fielderand George Kottaras go deep, for the benefit of Randy Wolf.

The Tampa Bay Rays improve their record to 12-4, the best in the majors, after completing a 9-1 road trip with a 10 – 2 win over the Chicago White Sox. James Shields is the winner as Carlos Pena drives in four runs.

Former major league manager Kevin Kennedy, now working as a broadcaster for the Tampa Bay Rays, is suddenly thrust into the limelight, as he intervenes to stop a deranged man who threatens to blow up a flight between Los Angeles, CA and Tampa, FL. Kennedy is one of ten passengers who subdue the madman as the Delta Air Lines flight is diverted to Albuquerque, NM.

Jason Heyward, 20-year-old rookie outfielder for the Braves, continues to be one of baseball’s biggest stories this young season. Today, he knocks in the winning run with a two-out single in the bottom of the 9th in Atlanta’s 4 – 3 win over Colorado. His 15 RBI put him in a tie for second place in the National League even though he is hitting seventh in the batting order.

One day after playing a marathon 20-inning contest, the Cardinals’ bullpen gets some rest as Adam Wainwright pitches a complete game for a 5 – 3 win over the Mets. Colby Rasmus and Ryan Ludwick’s homers account for all of St. Louis’s runs; Wainwright helps his own cause by doubling ahead of Ludwick’s blast in the 8th. For their part, the Mets designate 1B Mike Jacobs for assignment before the game in order to call up P Tobi Stonerfrom AAA Buffalo. Jacobs has become redundant because of the rapid development of prospect Ike Davis, who will be called up to the majors tomorrow. Stoner is the losing pitcher in his only game of the season, in spite of giving up only one run in 2 1/3 innings of work with the Mets’ bullpen also burnt out from yesterday’s game.

Ubaldo Jimenez pitches the first no-hitter in Colorado Rockies history. He disposes of the Atlanta Braves, 4 – 0, at Turner Field to improve to 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA for the year. Jimenez is helped by a spectatular diving catch of a Troy Glaus line drive by Dexter Fowler in the 7th inning.

Roy Halladay is acclimatizing well to the National League. He earns his third victory of the young season in an 8 – 6 Phillies win in wet conditions over the Florida Marlins. Working quickly, “Doc” allows only two runs in eight innings, but his bullpen makes things interesting as the Marlins collect five hits and four runs against David Herndon in the 9th. In the game, Florida’s Jorge Cantu’s record streak of games with a hit and RBI from the start of the season ends at 10, as he is unable to collect an RBI.

Giants CF Aaron Rowand suffers a fractured cheek and a mild concussion when hit by a pitch thrown by Vicente Padilla in the 5th inning of a game against the Dodgers. Rowand is taken to the hospital, and will be placed on the disabled list two days later. The Giants lose 10 – 8, as Todd Wellemeyer falls to Padilla.

The Pirates pull out a couple of brilliant defensive plays in beating the Giants, 6 – 5. With Pittsburgh leading 3 – 1 and a runner on first base, Aubrey Huff knocks a ball that appears headed past the mound for an infield single. But pitcher Paul Maholm dives to the ground, stops the ball, and in one motion flips it with his glove to 1B Jeff Clement to retire Huff while completing a backwards somersault. Then, in the bottom of the 9th, Garrett Jones, now playing 1B, makes a lunging grab of Pablo Sandoval’s line drive to end the game.
