In a conference call meeting, Major League Baseball owners approve the sale of the Miami Marlins by Jeffrey Loria to a group headed by Bruce Sherman and former player Derek Jeter.

2017 – In an otherwise meaningless game, Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen hits the first grand slam of his career off Kevin Gausman in the 2nd inning of a 10 – 1 Bucs win over the Orioles. It took McCutchen over 5,000 at-bats, during which he slugged 201 homers, before connecting for the first time with the bases loaded. He completes his night’s work with an RBI double in the 2nd, a single in the 5th after which he comes in to score, and a three-run homer in the 7th to finish with 8 RBIs, one shy of the franchise record.

In the second inning of the Cubs’ 10-2 rout of the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, Addison Russell dives into the stands chasing a foul ball, spilling a fan’s nachos onto the playing field. In the following frame, the Chicago shortstop hand delivers a fresh order of tortilla covered with cheese to the grateful Redbird fan. 2017 – The Cubs’ principal mid-season acquisition, P José Quintana, proves to be worth it as he shuts out the Brewers on three hits in a 5 – 0 win in the final game of a four-game series at Miller Park. By winning three of four against their closest rivals, the Cubs have increased their lead in the NL Central to 5 1/2 games and lowered their magic number to two.

2017 – The Dodgers clinch a fifth consecutive NL West title with a 4 – 2 win over the Giants. In the game, Cody Bellinger hits his 39th homer of the year, setting a new National League record for rookies, erasing the mark of 38 that was shared by Wally Berger and Frank Robinson.

2017 – Mike Moustakas sets a new Royals franchise record with his 37th homer of the season when he connects off Carlos Ramirez in the 6th inning of a 15 – 5 win over the Blue Jays. The record had been held by Steve Balboni since 1985 and the Royals are the only major league team never to have had a player with a 40-homer season. Moustakas also hits a single and a double in the game, while teammates Salvador Perez and Whit Merrifield homer in support of Jakob Junis’s pitching. For Ramirez, these are the first earned runs he has allowed all season after maintaining a virgin ERA through 37 2/3 innings in the minors and 10 in the majors before giving up 4 in this game.

With over 300 games left to play in the season, Major League Baseball sets a new record for most home runs when Alex Gordon hits #5,964 for the season, eclipsing the mark set in 2000. If players maintain their pace over the remaining two weeks, the final total should be over 6,100.

With a 1 – 0 win over Baltimore, the Red Sox tie a franchise record with their 15th extra-inning win of the season (against three losses). The only run of the game scores when Jackie Bradley Jr. crosses home plate on a wild pitch by Brad Brach with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the 11th inning.

2017 – In a rare highlight for the Tigers this season, Matt Boyd comes within one out of throwing a no-hitter, giving up a two-out double to Tim Anderson of the White Sox in the 9th. He then retires the next batter to complete a 12 – 0 one-hitter.

The Red Sox set a team record with 24 strikeouts in a 15-inning, 13 – 6 win over the Rays. The game takes 6 hours and 5 minutes to play, and ends after the Sox score seven times in the top of the 15th and the Rays cannot reply. The game features 21 pitchers in all. Chris Sale strikes out 9 in 5 2/3 innings, and all eight men who succeed him on the mound record at least one K.
