On his 26th birthday, Mike Trout collects his 1,000th career hit, a line drive double into the left-field corner off Dylan Bundy in the Halos’ 6-2 loss to the Orioles at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. The Millville Meteor becomes the tenth American Leaguer to reach the milestone prior to his age-26 season.
The Mariners acquire 1B Yonder Alonso from the Athletics in return for young OF Boog Powell. Alonso is having a career year after playing in his first All-Star Game three weeks ago.
The Dodgers complete their first-ever season sweep of the Mets with an 8 – 0 win on a combined one-hitter by Hyun-Jin Ryu, Tony Cingrani and Kenley Jansen. New York only places two men on base all day: Travis d’Arnaud who hits a single in the 3rd, and Brandon Nimmo who draws a walk in the 9th. Meanwhile, Cody Bellinger hits his 32nd homer and Justin Turner, who also homers, improves his National League-leading batting average to .349. As the Associated Press puts it: “Los Angeles crushed the Mets like refuse in a trash compactor, outscoring them 57-15 over seven games and outhomering them 25-11.”
The Indians unveil a bronze statue honoring Lou Boudreau, who managed the team to their last World Series title in 1948 while also being the Tribe’s starting shortstop. The seven-time All-Star is placed outside the main entrance of Progressive Field near two fellow Hall of Famers and former teammates, Bob Feller and Larry Doby.
Jaime Garcia becomes the first pitcher to make three straight appearances as a starter for three different teams since 1895 when Gus Weyhing started consecutive games for the Phillies, Pirates, and Louisville Colonels. The 31 year-old southpaw has been traded twice July 24, taking the mound for the Braves, Twins, and Yankees in a span of 15 days.
A pair of 9th-inning homers off closer Wade Davis lead the Diamondbacks to a 10 – 8 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Paul Goldschmidt connects for his third long ball of the game with one out, and J.D. Martinezfollows with another dinger. Goldschmidt has 6 RBIs on the day, and his performance is almost matched by Cubs C Willson Contreras, who also drives in 6, but with only two home runs. The back-and-forth game starts 90 minutes late because of rain and is interrupted twice, for 35 minutes in the 2nd and another 30 minutes in the 9th.
It’s a wild and crazy game between two teams fighting for the lead in their respective divisions at Fenway Park. Cleveland jumps to an early 5 – 0 lead against Chris Sale, but Boston comes right back, chasing Carlos Carrasco in the 2nd. In the 5th, Indians CF Austin Jackson robs Hanley Ramirez of a homer by jumping over the center field fence, catching the ball, and tumbling into the bullpen while holding on to the ball all the way; the catch is so spectacular that the Fenway faithful can’t help but give him a huge ovation. In the 6th, Eduardo Nunez clears the bases with a double off Andrew Miller against the Green Monster, putting Boston ahead, 9 – 7, but Cleveland claws back. Carlos Santana greets newly-acquired reliever Addison Reed with a lead-off homer in the 8th, and in the 9th, Francisco Lindor homers off closer Craig Kimbrel to tie the game. A rattled Kimbrel then loads the bases with two outs before throwing a wild pitch that puts the Indians ahead, 10 – 9. But Cody Allen blows a lead in turn, as rookie Rafael Devers beats out a bouncer to third, Mitch Moreland reaches on a dropped third strike with two outs, and Christian Vazquez ends the game by blasting a pitch into the stands for a 12 – 10 win.
Evan Longoria hits for the cycle, becoming the second player in team history to pull off the feat, as the Rays defeat the Astros, 6 – 4. It takes a video review to confirm that he slid safely into second base in the 9th for the missing double that completes the quartet of hits.
It’s a busy final day before the trading deadline with a dozen trades being announced. The Dodgers steal the show by landing three pitchers, Yu Darvish, Tony Cingrani and Tony Watson, in separate deals, costing them six minor league prospects and veteran OF Scott Van Slyke. The other big acquisition goes to the Yankees, who pry SP Sonny Gray from Oakland for three prospects, two of whom – Dustin Fowler and James Kaprielian – are out with injuries for the remainder of the season. Also changing teams are Brandon Kintzler, Francisco Liriano, Addison Reed and Joe Smith, among others.
